Re: Turkish earth quake
Latest news, at least one Aussie killed was visiting his sister there.
Death toll now considered to be in the order of 27,000 and rising.
I agree with Des as to building standards, have seen them in a number of other countries, not good by any standard.

Re: Turkish earth quake
Watched on TV last night a programme of the the three Teutonic plates that are right under Turkey, any movement and it's disaster time, there is no way I would like to live there much as I like the Med and Adriatic.

Re: Turkish earth quake
Turkey is now one of the biggest tourist destinations for Brits going on holiday. The Turks are now pushing North Cyprus hard for the coming summer. Think I will give the area a miss.

Re: Turkish earth quake
It is quite possible that there were other such disasters not documented, maybe evidence lost in the mists of time.
But for certain this is not the last event of such a nature.
The movement of plates beneath the surface may remain dormant for centuries then for some unknown reason act up again.
Looks as if the Costa del packet may be flavour of the season again.

Costa del Wirral /UK will do me from now on. Going to change the name on my house now from Windy Corner to the old favourite Dun-Roamin.

Re: Turkish earth quake
The only time I ever felt any kind of earth tremor, was when I was up in the restaurant at the top of the Farmers building in Auckland with my then girlfriend. I saw my coffee shaking along with a kind of slight sense of something going on. I said to her "hey! look at that" she said "oh that's just a tiny earthquake" we get them all the time.
That Farmers building was just off Queen Street to the right I think, coming up from the docks. Is it still there? Must have been the tallest building there at that time, early to late 60s.
