    Default Royal College of Nursing

The RCN are calling the UK Nurses
to go on strike for a salary rise of 19 percent.
The Government and even Labour has said it is to much.
RCN staff have been offered arise of 4.5 percent which has been rejected and they have called for strike action.

They supposedly have public support. That support will fall off , 19% maybe for those on entry level pay scales.
    Found this online.
There appear to be grading /Band pay scale I assume the higher the band the more qualifications a nurse holds.
I do not know how long it would take to go from Band 1 to the top band 9
Band 1 £20,270 remains the same as long as you stay in band 1.
Band 5 after a year if that is possible? £27,055 after 5 years £32,934, after 8years rate remains the same.
Top band appears to be Band 9 and after a year (if possible to acheive maybe after a Uni deg?) £95,134 5 years it is £109,475 remains the same pay scale 8 year +

We all rely on NHS but if you are happy to remain on the bottom of the ladder that is your choice. Part of the problem could be that a trainee nurse has to go to Uni?

    https://careers.uhs.nhs.uk/Starting-...associate.aspx
You need 3 A levels? or similar?

For most courses, you’ll require three A levels or equivalent qualifications (the grades required will vary by university, usually ranging between 104-200 UCAS points). This will usually include a science or social science subject, as well as GCSE English and maths, or equivalent qualifications.
Nurses can get £5000 a yaer to help with tution costs.

As said we all I am sure have sympathy with nurses but the government and the Union need to tell Joe public the whole truth.

Yes over the years the NHS staff at certain levels have been let down by the government, we where glad of all frontline workers during the pandemic(never heard anyone singing the praises of seafarers mind)

Also the public need to know more about how the NHS pension scheme operates.
Even Labour are saying 19% is not an option at this time.

It is not just a UK problem, the issue with nursing is global.
In simple terms there are just not enough.

The EU, to reach full capacity for all services requires about another 200,000.
It takes four years to train a nurse, two years in Uni, one in a public hospital then one more at Uni.
Thye ae then junior nurses and will take a good few years to reach senior status.

But rates of pay are very low, we had a strike with nurses here back in the 1990's, got a pay rise and better conditions of one nurse to four patients.
Talk of more trouble here if conditions do not improve.

Fact is though that these people are worth aer more than any gov can understand.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

The yearly salary of an MP in UK is £84,144. Qualifications and experience not required, the MP is also paid expenses for running an office and staff costs together with London housing and travel costs. Other perks include subsidized Commons bars and restaurants, free flights and accommodation if an interest is declared in a particular overseas country.
Compare this to nurses, who is more valuable and necessary? Who provides the greater service?

Louis, no one is arguing about the differential in MP's and Nurses Salary.
The whole point of my post was the hypocrisy of the RCN in demanding 19% pay rise and refusing their own workers at their headquarter a decent pay rise.

My son is a nurse, and he was lucky to be on the last intake in1999, just before project 2000 was launched, this was when a nurse had to go to university, which obviously entailed the debt that university degrees accrue, so a nurse coming from her degree course would be in debt to the tune of at least £35000. that degree now entitles you to be employed by the hospital, and as we all know is menial bum wiping etc for a large amount of the time. Now while many nurses are dedicated, and on the old system of on the job training, were very good, a lot of younger people thinking of nursing as a profession must be put off with that sort of debt. hence the shortage of nurse, so what we do now, is allow the poorer countries to train their nurses and then we poach them. They are very good, as anyone attending hospital knows, but where is the morality of that .

    Keith
We have the same problem here, nurses are not paid anywhere near what they deserve, but wait; we have a crisis with the football league players, they get $150 thousand a year but should be paid double that which is now in negotiation, sport versus lives which is the more important.
As for nurses paying for their university course, they should be free, provided they are prepared to serve a certain lengh of time..

Louis, spot on as usual mate, those w****s in parliament are not worth the paper they are written on. Doubt if most would make it to smoko in the real world, and we let them run, well try, to run thercountry.

Keith, until 1985 all nurses here in Oz were trained in hospitals, then some clown decided to put them into Uni.
Here in Oz now if they complete the four years they will not have to pay Uni fees, but for their first year they will be allocated a hospital somewhere out the back of Burke, and that is a long way from home.

Then the bloody polis not only get all the perks, when they give it away a bloody great big pension.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Vic I think the 19% is a negotiation figure, I doubt the RCN expect that even in their wildest dreams. I think nobody begrudges the nurses a wage increase. It is how much that creates contention.

In Aystralia, the Royal College is a professional association, the Nurses Union is the political arm.
Great to hear that Australian National War Memorial is having a statue of Viviann Bulwinkel designed for the memorial. A great nurse we should all be proud of.
