Re: channel crossings
John, Australia is the 6th largest country in the world with a population of less than 26 million. It is only a matter of time that Australia will be taking in a lot more refugees like it or not.
Europe should impose a trade embargo against Australia if they do not agree to help out what is a world problem.

Re: channel crossings
One country we are getting people from is the USA, we now also have cooking programs, coulered only [If that is allowed] shows from the same country; which we find we cannot follow as the English is to heavily accented, thank god for the off switch.. Most street interviews are now in broken English. Down here in Cooma we have people from all over the world who have been here long enough to speak the language, nothing wrong with immigrants, I was one myself, provided they make an effort to mix.

Re: channel crossings
James, we will over the next two years take in some 600,000 legal migrants.
Our constitution states that the natin will decide who comes here, when and by what means.
Most will require some form of sponsorship and be required to put up a returnable bond.
Yes we are large, but do you or any others understand the nature of the land?
Apart from the Alice we all live along the coast line, the only green part of the country.
Over 85% of this land is desert of one kind or another, water inland is at a premium, roads for much are unmade, making much of the land uninhabitable.
Even the Aboriginals never lived in those parts.

Re: channel crossings
#93 John Australia maybe needs to take a leaf out of the Arabs book of HOW TOO. You have loads of natural gas, coal , you are surrounded by the Ocean so start to build more desalination plants and start bigger Irrigation projects. If the Arabs can turn deserts into green farmlands grow crops such as Wheat Why can Australia not do the same. Frequently we hear about droughts in Australia, Farmers losing Cattle & Sheep, desalination has to be better than a load of Aborignes of there heads chanting & dancing for the rains to come.

Re: channel crossings
We have a desalination plant in Sydney built years ago for $millions but only turned on once, a total waste of money. What we need is more Dams, we have had over the last six months enough floods to drown Britain if it had happened there. We have massive rivers that continually pour good water into the seas. There is a large river that runs for thousands of miles Queensland to South Australia, could probably take four Dams, instead politicians prefer to procrastinate about cost, just like they do about a high speed train, then send huge amounts of money we cannot afford to a war that has nothing to do with Australia.

Re: channel crossings
James, the Arab lands you speak of are very different in condition to those of the Oz deserts.
We have desal plants in all states, and some dams.
But the main problem is the demographics of the land, much of which is below sea level.
Yes we get floods but to harness that is not so easy
Bore water is used by many farmers, and yes we have droughts,'
Coal and gas we export but the Greens, on which the current gov depend for votes, will not allow it to be used here.
They only want all electric.
But the latest on that is not good news.
It is estimated that by 2030 there will be some 30,000 tones of EV batteries that will need to be replaced, or in some instances the vehicle scrapped.
There are no plans for any form of Recyling of them.
This will be a problem for all countries who use EV.

A war that has nothing to do with Australia, so if China decide to attack Australia that will have nothing to do with Europe then?

In the proper scheme of things that is correct, we should have good relations with all of South East Asia which includes China, they are our biggest trading partner. we live here, the Americans don't.
