A lot of job contracts part of the deal is if requested that you work overtime you have to agree to work overtime. Also in the contract it will state that overtime hours worked is not paid for. The deal is that for overtime worked you get time off in lieu. Some are having problems getting the time off. Win win for the employer.

When the carriers were assembled in Rosyth the workers worked a three day 12 hour shift.

Wages seem about right but hours of work/rest regs state max of 77 hours per week but time for safety drills/ work cannot be included in the 77 hours.

Very common now here in Oz tat for any one on a 30 hour week is considered to be full time.
But smart companies now put as many workers as they can as sub contractors, not their worry then.

    Doc. Re. #13.

"All quite true Rodney. However, don't forget the paid leave every six weeks (2 weeks in Southampton} on them Castle ships."

All I remember being paid for was "Sundays at Sea", which amounted to four days on a Cape run. and about seven on the long way around Africa via Suez out of London docks, the other days were unpaid, and turnaround was in a week. One ship left Southampton, and another arrived, I think the next a.m. When I was in it there was no other paid leave, just paid extra for Sundays at Sea along with your wages at payoff.

UCL scheduled it as best they could to make sure you had maximum Sundays in port so you wouldn't get paid extra. I'm sure it was common practice amongst all the shipping companies. naturally I am talking about my sea time. 30-11-53 to 21-5-58.

I enjoyed most of my time, except for my trip on the La Cumbre, hated it from day one. I look back on the other trips on Port Line and the Castle boats with great memories, but I did the right thing in leaving when I did and emigrating. My life has been wonderful and beyond my wildest expectations. I wouldn't change a thing since I walked through the foreboding open gates of the original Gravesend (aptly named) Sea Training School to today retired in Oklahoma. Excepting the loss of my beloved wife.

    Cheers, Rodney

    Hi Rodney
Well i cannot say that i recall the things you say , (Not disputing them) but i do remember that all Mail Ships , you had a Two Week Break (Paid Leave) in Southampton on each Trip, unless you decided to do what was known as a Quick Turnaround, that then gave you the time to catch the next Ship out (UCL) , this in turn however entitled you to still get that full two Weeks pay, plus then the extra Turnaround time at Sea, so it was a nice Bonus! I did that a few times!

And as said on the Round Africa runs, it was a Three Week paid Leave Break, with the same options if you wanted a Quick Turnaround.

Then of course besides all that , there was the nice Envelopes one got at the end of each Bloods Trips!
I can once again say that most all my tips i received from my Bloods were of substancial ammounts!

I most always got more in Tips than in actual Wages, not counting the Sundays at Sae and O/T!

Every Thursday at 1600 hours a UCL would sail from Southampton.
Every Friday at 0600 hours a UCL would dock in Southampton.
We got our pay, cheap ticket for train to London then ten days later back to the ship.
Tuesday morning by 0800 hours report back to the second steward.

As long as you accepted that you would be away from for lengthy periods it was a good job.

George, yes the long trips, or the trampers actually became my preferred voyages, i tried the shorter , more regular trips, eg Union Castle,McAndrews fruit boats etc, but the not knowing where you were bound, or for how long was just for me, preferable. That is until i met my wife to be, and all things changed, prior to that i had had no ties. No regrets on that as i came ashore and now married for 57 years come next Saturday. kt

To be away from home for long periods was the main reason most of us joined the MN.
Being away from the grey humdrum life of a shore worker, to escape for a life of adventure travelling the world.
