It can vary wildly of course depending on the trade and vessel specialisation. Some pay more, others of course pay less.
As a rough guide, a British seaman today earns the following:
ABs: 20-30K
Bosun: 30-35K
3rd mate-2nd mate: 30-40K
Mate: 50-55K
Master: 60K
The current UK average wage according to the Office for National Statistics is approximately £38,000.
The hours of rest regulations allow a seaman to work a legal maximum of 91 hours per week, so an average of 13 hours per day; many do just that especially in short sea trades.
Most British seamen now work a 1for1 trip/leave rotation, e.g. 2 weeks on/off, 6 weeks on/off and 3 months on/off being some of the more common arrangements. RFA still doesn't, as do a few of the remaining deepsea companies.
With regard to foreigners you can cut the leave ratio by half if not more, for example foreign crew on the Irish sea ferries work 6 weeks on/3 weeks off in comparison to their British counterparts who do 2 weeks on/off.
Wages wise, again you can easily divide by 2.

The Castle boats big ships scheduled a Sunday stop in Las Palmas, so no Sunday out bound at sea on the Cape run, and another one in Durban and Cape town if I remember. And no meal breaks in the galley, you ate on the run. The only break UCSL gave is they abolished the Press Gangs.
Cheers, Rodney
All quite true Rodney, however dont forget the Paid leave every Six Weeks (2 Weeks in Southampton) on them Castle Ships!
And with some , like me on some of the Runs i had with them, i was given plenty of extra O/T so cannot really complain! Had a lot of chanches too going ashore at places like Las Palmas, Madeira, St Helena which were lovely Islands , then i also had trips that i had applied to have special leave in Cape Town , while the Ship went to Durban and back, i was lucky !! So managed to spend some time with my dear Mother and baby Sister at the time!
Cheers
As for Meals on the Run, mate that was always on the cards, but did have some real good Meals in the Mornings after we had finished with the Bloods.
Linnen and Beer Carries each Morning too, Scrubouts, Porthole cleaning, Silver Polishing and dont forget the bleedin Kids Teas! LOL

Did you actually read my post!!! 4x12 = 48 hours a week. I never had a problem paying the mortgage or the bills. But I went my own way and followed the money and made a few quid to live a reasonable life in comfort. Problem with someone who invests in an idea will likely look for ythe cheapest work force possible. They might get a government grant to build the factory and not pay any taxes for 10 years. After 10 years they will likely --ss off to a 3rd world country and employ a work force at a lower rate of pay. That is why you have a lot of people in the UK who are feeling perhaps under valued.

I agree Jim about rates of pay. Big problem is the cost of living between here and say Manila. Even the Filipinos are being priced out of the market as ship owners are looking for cheaper crews. We are an Island race we will always need British well trained crews. Yes I know there are Spud peeling machines these days but someone has to load the machine and empty it. Probably doing a better job than by some in the old days

I did 5 trips with Filipino crews and I must say that they were generally excellent; really good seamen, great workers and very amenable blokes who loved a beer and a sing song.
In one ship a weekly BBQ was a regular event and the cooks would put on the most marvelous spread, anyway I remember our Filipino Bosun having a chat with the (British) Old Man and him being gobsmacked that said old man didn't send his kids to private school and didn't have domestic staff at home.
Back in the Philippines our Bosun had two maids, a gardener, a chauffeur (for his wife) and both kids had been to private school and the best university in the country.
That wasn't nonsense either, it was common amongst the Filipino Bosuns/Pumpmen/Chippys etc. as I later found out.
Just goes to demonstrate that it was actually the British officers who were being financially exploited, not the crew!

Re: The 4 day week ?
Maybe this is why people find it so hard to make ends meet.
Andani scales list to be Worlds second!!!! richest man
Gautam Andani the Indian Tycoon who has climbed the wealth rankings at breakneck speed, has surpassed Jeff Bozos to become the Worlds second richest person.
Adani, who started the year at no fourteen in the Bloomsburg Billionaires Index, now has a $US 146.8 billion { $A218.7 Billion] fortune that lags behind only Elon Musk's $US363 .9Billion.
Shares in his flagship Adani Enterprises LTD surged to a record this week
Bezos trails Adani by just US $19million
I wonder how many meals he eats a day.
Today I paid a bill for for the Winter electricity, and Insurance total $1100 out of a fortnightly Pension of $1700, no problem, we can still have a good life on the remaining $600.

Re: The 4 day week ?
Rodders, as you well know it was not uncommon on UCL for wingers to work as many as 14 hours a day in some instances.
But here in Oz the same thing, we have currently about the lowest unemployment rate ever at 3.4% and employers are still looking for more workers.
Yet we have some who regularly call in to the Missing Link to register for unemployment benefits.
Some of the hardest workers are the immigrants , maybe feel they have to impress.
But the push for a 4 day week is there but will only work in some industries, not all.
But less hours for the same money will not fix many of the problems we have such as the rate of inflation.
Working from home during the pandemic has made the situation worse, you will not be allowed to work in the office in your PJ.
Get them all back and maybe things will improve, but then we have the unions now with the rostered day off at least once a month.
The problem is that many workers do not have the skill sor work ethics to do more than a few hours a week.
Maybe the answer is a money tree in every ones garden!!!!
Happy daze John in Oz.
Life is too short to blend in.

4 day week !!! Who comes up with these crazy idea's ??
How do they expect working people to find the time to work 4 days a week ??
Some days I do nothing but it still takes all day to do it.
