    Years ago i did a survey on behalf of Underwriters of Kelco in San Diego, California. They harvest and process the Kelp forests off the coast. Use sea going lawn mowers to cut off the surface kelp down to about 4 feet as it has rapid regrowth of a meter a day. They mostly process it down to a powder form (Algin) and i was surprised to learn that it is used to bind liquid and cream product ranging from Paint to Ice Cream — used as a binder in just about everything that comes in a spray can. I thought that the west coast Irish peoples harvested regular seaweed which they used to spread over the bare rock in layers to eventually make into an earth like compost where soil was absent. Now i see it as wraps for Sushi. As noted, Popey did well on spinach, a land based food.

    Seaweed was part of our diet when we were kids, larva bread and cockles was a regular on the table at tea time, and as for using it in the garden we used to bring home sack full's on our bikes and mix it with the compost for the garden and the allotment, great stuff for growing
    veg. people these days have forgotten how to get the best out of nature, instead of seeing an opportunity they see a problem on how to get rid of natures bounty.

    Its a bit off topic , but still about the harvests from the sea. I sailed with someone in the long distant past whose father was a chemist of sorts. He was employed in making women’s perfumes .The high costs of some perfumes he told me was that the expensive ones had something and the name slips me at the moment , a few ounces of which could only be found , I believe it was on the Sperm Whale. It seems that to kill a whale would be cost effective just for this , apart from all the other products from this fine animal. I never heard any issues pointing out any of this from the animal rights people. Maybe they were unaware. They made plenty of noise when it came to women’s fur coats . It was a small amount think it was found in the hump, so may of even been a humpback whale . Cheers JS

    That’s the name Des , must be Albert Simers setting in. This bloke had a very small bottle and he reckoned it was worth a lot , he never offered to sell it so was maybe looking for someone with more money. Whales were always a pain in the ass on seismic ships as down here had to carry a whale watcher, and whenever he spotted one, all work had to stop , as they reckoned the underwater explosions disturbed them. A whale to me if he is upset will make himself scarce . Seismic work is continuous 24 hours a day and I asked him what about during the hours of darkness did the whales go to bed the same as him, he had no answer. I suppose as long as he had an easy job and was being paid he was happy. Cheers JS

    On the subject of Whales, it appears the Japanese have stopped the Whaling of Minky Whales, all for scientific research you understand.
    According to one source there is so much in freezers in Japan that they do not need any more.,
    Only the older generation eats it now, the younger ones are into the Golden Arches instead.

    Lewis not certain how whale vomit would go down in Wales but,
    Welsh / Swansea breakfast is a treat with the taste of the coast
    There's nothing like the smell of cockles and laverbread sizzling
    away in a pan to bring the essence of the Welsh coast directly to
    you, wherever you might be. And that's the beauty of the our
    breakfast - it's like a trip to the seaside for your mouth.
