John 63, they are describing us as the 5th wheel on the cart, if that is the case, they must be the spare left back in the farmyard to rust. they have cancelled a security meeting today, planned with the UK, like bloody kids, take their bat and ball home because they lost again, kt

I haven't back tracked thro the posts, but surely some of the blame must lay at the door of the OZ politicos who negotiated during 2013 -2016 the contract with the French for already outdated equipment when they placed the order in 2016. Surely the Oz navy advisors must have pointed out to them that diesel subs could be easily located and indeed would become modern coffin vessels. Surely the contract will have cancellation clauses which are activated by delay clauses, the French of course have been screwed at their own game, because if we believe what we read then they screwed the Japanese to obtain the contract.

Having negotiated contracts with both the Japanese and French, I prefer to deal with the former, as what is written is adhered to, the French have the opposite attitude what is written has no actual value. Just my observations and experiences in my life, others may have encountered different.

The submarine deal between Australia and France was a partnership based on trust, mutual understanding and sincerity. No doubt handshakes were exchanged but recently these handshakes have amounted to nothing as France has been blindsided by this badly handled decision.

Apparently the Frogs have just dipped out on a big fighter plane deal with the Swiss, they thought they were in, but they decided on the Yankee aircraft in stead, kt

The original deal was signed three years late.
The original cost was $36 which has now estimated at $66b and rising.
Original deal 90% of the the subs/ material etc was to be 90% which was reduced to 60% and is or was still heading southwards.
French pi**ed the Australians off by taking month long holidays and further pi**ed them off by always arriving ate for meeting, apparently its the done thing in France to arrive upto 15 mins late for a scheduled meeting.
Lewis, don't know where you get your info.
The first Astute class submarine was completed 2007, there are four in service, one under construction with another two on order, hardly old subs. The Astute would be similar to the ones that the Aussies want.

The PM who signed up to the French deal was never certain on which side of politics he sat.
As a banker he tried to join the Labor party but they did not want him.

He signed up to a deal that was total crap, turning nuclear subs into diesel powered ones which would not be available until about 2040 by which time they would be obsolete.

The whole issue si all around control of the South China seas and to reduce the effect of China in the region.

Come the next feral erection Labor will go along with the deal, they will haver no choice if they wish to remain close to USA.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.

I think it is the attitude of the French that gets up most noses, they appear to want to have it all ways up and bend rules which will benefit them but not not happy if someone else stuffs them up.
I recall some years ago when Cammell Lairds won a contract to lengthen an Italian ship, which would be save Cammells from going bust. The contract was signed and the ship en route to the Mersey when the Italian government intervened and the ship was returned to an Italian yard; not a peep out of anyone was heard, so much for EU unity.

The french in WW2. sank our ships and had PoW camps in West Africa which were worse than the Japanese ones.Red Cross parcels dumped in the swamps. A lot of British Merchant Seamen were forced marched through the swamps and jungles and the desert to Timbuctoo and killed there.
the CWGC Commission now look after their graves,.

#75, alas in 1939 Britain had a commitment to Poland, and although we were ill prepared and ill equipped, we stood by the commitment. The French also sunk many of our MN vessels and interred our seafarers (yes! I know about the French fleet in Marseille) and treated them badly, so yes Lewis we are scathing about the French, not as individuals, but as a political system, and from my own experiences when in business. Just as well they have not chopped all the trees down lining the roads as the Germans will need them to march in the shade when they arrive uninvited again

Lewis, the modern German state was founded in 1871and since then the UK and its allies fought them twice and won.
As for France, remember a few years ago a M. E. country had weapons embargo placed on it, UK lost a big contract, Froggies stepped in and supplied the weapons, no complaints then.
Look at Brexit France led by Macron put blocks at every single step of the negotiation to hamper the UK and you wonder why we slag France.
