    Default UK influencer

A smart assed woman influencer from the UK came out to Sydney last week and started taking the piss over our Covid hotel quarantine system, she breached it by leaving for a wonder around Sydney, she was picked up by the police who fined her $1,000, probably nothing for her, but they then escorted her to the airport and chucked her out. apparently she might be an influencer in the UK, but she hadn't heard of the Tall Poppy syndrome over here.

Saw that bit Des, not sure why she got the DCM, was it because of her Covid comments or her political views.

I would say that 99.9% of the UK population had never heard of her, she was only an influencer (whatever that is) in her own mind and wanted her one minute of fame, again in her own mind

#4 Never heard the term either Ivan, but by the brief description the nearest maritime version would be a sea lawyer. Usually no good to man or beast . JS.

    Red face Re: UK influencer

Well,I've heard of the newish term Influencer (not a nice sounding word in my opinion),but I'd never heard of Tall Poppy Syndrome !

What is the Tall Poppy Syndrome?
This story, told by Herodotus and collected by Aristotle, inspired what in many Anglo-Saxon countries is known as “Tall Poppy Syndrome.

The Tall Poppy Syndrome affects people who stand out from the average, either because of their high skills, their excellent qualities or because they have achieved great success. Related to the Procruste’s Syndrome, it is known as the Tall Poppy Syndrome because all plants are expected to grow at the same speed and height, so those that grow too fast must be reduced.

In the same way, in groups or societies that promote egalitarian principles, standing above the average is considered antisocial since it goes against the dominant culture. As a result, these people arouse in the others feelings of hostility that give way to harmful attitudes and behaviors to try to tear them down.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't you think that Procruste's Syndrome mentioned above brings to mind a steaming hot pie with a golden crust on it?....

I've probably been called A Short Pansy before(behind my back obviously, otherwise they wouldn't have lived to see another day !(I'd have scratched their eyes out,and they'd have indentations on their head from my trusty brick-concealing handbag- so Tall Poppy is a new one on me !
I shall try and use it as much as possible in future.I wonder how many Tall Poppies there are on site?....

A tall poppy in Australian lingo would mean to many children a tall grand father Graham. To many seamen could be that tall girl in Ma Gleasons with legs going up to her waist called poppy. Or it could be an old chinaman getting high on opium. All these went through my mind and am sure it means something else. Cheers JS

Myself however a tall poppy syndrome brings up pictures of the Ma Gleasons version where when one was nose to nose the toes were touching , and when toes to toes the nose was touching . It wasn’t so much a syndrome but more of a problem .

    Hi Graham.
It's an Aussie custom that cuts people who think they are better than anyone else down to size. One example was Frank Sinatra whose was black banned by the Unions after being abusive to a waitress or someone, he left Aus vowing never to come back .
Your Greek version sounds the same.
