#18 Well Ivan you got me there hook line and sinker lol
One thing I did learn was that there was no conscription in Ireland ,Northern Ireland in any of the wars. Those who went were volunteers obviously due to the political situation the government did not introduce it putting it rather unkindly as not worth the bother it would cause to much controversy.

    hi john #17
good morning, there was a lot of good irishmen both north and south whom served in the 2nd world war, including my old man whom was in the royal navy and had plenty of medterranean and russian convoy experience under his belt.

My own father was in the MN. Our next door neighbour was RN Submarines. They never really hit it off. All my Dad would say Irvine was in Subs, Mr Cummings on the other side of us was in the North Irish horse serving in North Africa and Italy.
I know C&P is not popular but this is well worth a read, it is about the only VC winner from N I in the second world war and how he was regarded by the bigots in N Ireland.

You may not have to worry about the Empire building, in the paper shop this morning, a huge headline saying that war will break out in the next ten years, and don't worry about closing the door as the Atom Bomb will figure prominently. This is the second time this month that a top civil? servant in Aus has mention the Drums of war beating, I do hope that he is in the first battalion to leave the Country.

Des, I too heard all that crap and just wonder who is he attempting to convince?
Sadly there ae those, mainly the ones on Fake book, who will believe him.
But if you think about it what is to be gained from a nuclear war, just a lot of dust.
All this because China claims Taiwan as theirs

John I think you are looking in the wrong direction. Iran will be the place the first nuclear strike will come from. What is going on in Gaza is a major worry.

Yes Lewis any conflict at present is of concern.
But what is to be gained by being the first to use any form of nuclear armaments?
You would not last long nor would the world if a third WW broke out.

Suggest you drink all that French wine you have while you still have the chance

John the difference is China realise there will be no winners if they get embroiled in a nuclear conflict, but the people who spend their Friday mornings with their a-se in the air view it as a passport to Paradise.
Given up on the EU/French wine now , new world wines only now.

you could be doing the right thing as france is reputed to have the worst year for grapes due to frost more or less for many years .....it just seems that we brits in general do not go for french wines anyway.....
