Re: Suez Blocked
Read #27 posted by doc , the link An excavator is trying to help free a ship stuck in the Suez Canal, but a photo shows how hard that'll be (msn.com) looks as if it has been written a 10 year old, I am referring to the link not Doc.It states the canal is being blocked by a BIG container.

Re: Suez Blocked
Don't you just love experts, but I am guessing that this one (a Master Mariner) has been misquoted by the interviewer, as some of us on here well know is normal. Apparently the MM stated that 'another possible' route to Middle East/Asia was going by the tip of Africa. I cannot imagine any MM saying 'another possible' (the empathsis was on 'possible') he more than likely said 'an alternative' route. As for extra costs by that route they would be somewhat mitigated by not having your vessel idle, but I suspect the real reason may be that Canal dues have to be paid in advance and for any owner thinking of up anchor and going via the Cape they will have to take into account a long legal battle to get their prepaid Canal Dues back and for some ships the dues are approaching $0.5 million, and if you're not awarded your legal fees then you're not going to get much back in the end.

Re: Suez Blocked
An interesting slant on canal pilots from someone who has done the transit on a large vessel, he was not a mariner but an observer. Don't think it relates directly to the Ever Given but many of us can relate to what he writes. All reports seem to blame sudden gusts of high wind acting on the deck stack but originally engine failure was noted but has not been mentioned since.
