Re: It's an ill wind
Not a daft statement Lewis, used to buy French wine, quality dropped off. New world wines far superior.

Re: It's an ill wind
I was looking for those with a chastity lock on but you couldn’t supply. I sold them to the bar manager in the Rex. Remember him . He used to have every match box imaginable of all the pubs you used to visit in Japan. If you could produce one he didn’t have would buy you a drink , it was very hard to get a free one after you had been in.
Cheers JS

Re: It's an ill wind
Brian you should replace the tyres on your car at least every 10 years regardless on tyre tread wear. Cracks in the tyre wall casings can appear and a car not used a great deal the tyres can be affected by the weather sunlight will degrade the tyre compounds etc! If you look at the tyre wall you will see the date of manufacture stamped on the tyre wall.
However, if you don't use your car very much - or own a classic - then tyre manufacturers' recommend that all tyres regardless of depth should be replaced after 10 years. We'd recommend having all tyres inspected annually if they're older than five years.

Re: It's an ill wind
Tony I had exactly the same C class Merc in 01 never so glad to get rid of a car in all my life, spent more time on the back of a recovery wagon than it did on the road, never again. I have had 3 Mercs 2,C class the first one was a 1997 C class great car never let me down. only fault I would say was really heavy on front tyres , a 2001 C Class Avantgarde compressor absolute rubbish, replaced it with a VW Passat as soon as it was out of warranty. The VW was not much better. Changed back to Vauxhalls which I had had many over the years , only pup was the Mk 1 Vectra worse than the 01 Merc. I had a 230 SLK tin top 1998 build fun car and no problems with it.

Lewis, in 98 I was spending every weekend for months trying to find a second hand passat, as new ones were on long delivery and expensive with second hand ones coming in near new prices. Then I saw a second hand Merc C class, 96 model, 2 years old, 24k miles with 12 months unlimited warranty plus a touring warranty for 2 grand less than a Passat so I thought I would give it a try; I put 203,000 miles on it then sold to my brother in law who put another 10k on it (still on the original clutch) then someone ran into it and wrote it off. Best all round car ever. I replaced with a e300TD with 100K on clock, only did 10k when I found the front axle was rotten with rust. The new C class was my wifes and after three years went back to VW. she has had a skoda since 2010 excellent car

Re: It's an ill wind
My last six cars have been mercs 'C' and 'B' class, last two MkII 'B' just the right height to slide in and out of, none have let me down so far (wish I hadn't said that, tempting fate!) not particularily heavy on tyres fronts around 15,000, rears around 22000, but I put that down to my rapid progress motoring and once they get down to 3mm I change them, I would never wait until down to the legal 1.6mm. Have my cars serviced by Merc dealers, not more expensive than independents and has a side benefit of worldwide recovery, which is active for 30 years if car serviced at Merc
Worst cars I've had for reliability have been expensive BMW's

Re: It's an ill wind
I think when Merc got into bed with Chrysler in 1998 Mercedes quality dropped.

Re: It's an ill wind
hi john sabourn #6
there is a lot of pretensions over wine, but it is a drink for all tastes, and one should never be put off by trying to please the crowd,i always prefered the chillean malbec and new world wines .
i hear buckfast is very popular in the northern hemisphere.
