Remember that place well Keith, a very striking Structure ,that is not missed by anyone who visits Southampton.

As you say many of us oldies at times staggered under the Bargate at times not knowing where we were going LOL

Just a short way from there was the old Checkpoint Cafe, had a Checkpoint Flag hanging outside ,and one had to go down Stairs to the Cafe!
Lovely Coffee , Milk Shakes, Banana Splits, Parfaits and all those lovely old things, with the Juke Boxes on the Wall at each Table, and lastly the Lovely Chicks that visited there! Oh La La!!!

Horse& groom. Gatiss Bar and a restaurant called German Edies, where, on a first visit your tie was cut off and hung from the ceiling along with quite a few more! (Those days most wouldn't even walk across the street without a tie, tie pin and cuff links).

Took photos of those very gates last June.
It has changed so much, no bars in the main street anymore, but the JB and a few others still exist.
No doubt still a great town but I did not feel the atmosphere I knew all those years ago.
But then again the grog fumes wee missing so that may have something to do with it.
The sidewalk is very flat, yet am sure it was not always so, remember a lot of cracked pavings which often caused many of the lads to fall over.
