Re: What the papers say.
Lived in Richmond Park road during the blitz. And the sky at night was a big red glow over London during the hours of darkness. The Messerschmitts that used to accompany the bombers and one Time one came in low machine gunning the full length of the street, my mother used to say they were after her , the bullet holes were and probably still are in the door of the house, if is still there.probably the holes are as well.to remind people. It was usual for the fighters to get rid of their excess weight for the shortage of fuel they had for their return flight back across the channel. When Hess parachuted into Scotland it was a on way trip only, he probably expected to be led out waving a surrender treaty. JWS...

Re: What the papers say.
We did not start that conflict, we only retaliated and gave them some of the treatment they had been dishing out.

Re: What the papers say.
We had a defence agreement with Poland, When Germany attacked and invaded Poland we had to declare war on Germany when they refused to leave Poland.
Hitler did us one favour,
We lived in a Slum, in Candle Alley. he demolished it for us, in 1940, just a hole in the ground, we were lucky we got into a shelter when the sirens went off.
Lot of neighbours died.
We were all split up, brothers sister and parents to different relatives, me to Grandmas, for the duration. and in 1946 got a good three bedroom Council House with hot water, electricity, a toilet and bathroom, Pure Luxury. So after six years we became a family again.

#10.... Des being the good Christian which I am not, I would have repeated that old Christian saying, “ Do unto others as they would do to you”. , if she/ he was a fanatic she/he the only answer to that would probably come back with “ love thy neighbour “ , the only answer to that is it depends who my neighbour is. There is no argument with these people they live in their own world , pity it wasn’t another one in a different universe. JS

Re: What the papers say.
Air Marshall Arthur "Bomber" Harris came in for a hell of a lot of criticism for his ordering of the blanket bombing method to be used on
German towns as there were so many civilians killed, Wood Green in North London where I was born was not an industrial town it was
residential but it certainly had it's share of being bombed , our hose was caught in the blast of a flying bomb {Doodlebug} 17 of our
neighbours died there, the blast has eventually cost me my hearing but I consider myself lucky to have lived, all of the bombing of London
was indiscriminate and more than enough Londoners died in the war years, but if they want to moan about blanket bombing, Hiroshima and
Nagasaki comes to mind, but it always seems to be the British that get picked out for the wrong doings, "every side has there share of blame".

Re: What the papers say.
The final actions of the Battle of the Atlantic took place on May 8, 1945, just before German surrender. Allies lost around 3,500 merchant ships and 175 warships in the fighting, along with roughly 72,000 sailors killed. German casualties numbered 783 U-boats and around 30,000 sailors (75% of the U-boat force). Victory in the Atlantic theater, one of WWII's most important fronts, was critical to the Allied cause. Prime Minister Churchill later cited its importance:
"The Battle of the Atlantic was the dominating factor all through the war. Never for one moment could we forget that everything happening elsewhere, on land, at sea or in the air depended ultimately on its outcome."

Re: What the papers say.
In today's Telegraph there is a article about our D Day celebrations in the UK, some of the photos are in colour but mostly black & white,
over the years I've seen quite a few photos Trafalgar Square and dancing in the street but there's pictures here I haven't seen before fromall around the UK, kids at street parties, school girls dancing to an accordion, the clothes and hairstyles and servicemen in their uniforms, I could almost see myself and sisters at the street parties, but the one thing that stood out was the pure joy on their faces, knowing they had come through six years of war and were ready for a new life, some think it's old hat but for me it's a part of our life, when we're gone the memories
will be gone as well and the pictures will just be pictures, cheers.

Re: What the papers say.
My wife lived in Gravesend through the war, Hitler apologized for bombing it by mistake, the German planes dropped the bombs there on the way back home, what an idiot. To those people who even weren't born during the war and who now spout about British atrocities, have no idea what it was like.
In our little village in Wales we had two German fighter bombers machine gunning us in broad daylight while they took pictures, then the bombers came over two nights later, blew part of the farm up killing all the farmers pigs and damaging one street, but plowed up a big field with bombs saving him a lot of work, missed the steel works completely. We had a Polish fighter squadron near by who made a mess of them on their way home.
Dresden had huge train marshaling yards hence the heavy bombing.

Re: What the papers say.
#18... The stories are already laid ready to alter the true facts and re-arrange history to satisfy any new world hierarchy. When no one is left to question the legitimacy of statements pumped out by personages wanting a different outcome. The main reason why such as this media with people from this generation should remain available for those seeking the truth in years to come. Already Russia is pictured in peoples minds as a despot nation, Britain the groundwork is being laid to follow suit. National Socialism is ready for its second rising in years to come there are still plenty ready to take up the banner. My attitude would be once the UK is clear then let them sort themselves out, let’s follow Switzerland’s history. Who I believe today although a land locked nation have more merchant ships than the UK. JWS.
