Thanks Vic - yes seen the article and there are brilliant pictures of the wreck and the sonar pics are unbelievable. Problem is that everything appears to be copyright so unable to show here. I think if you Google it you will see the articles.

The German Eagle holding the Swastica was salvaged from the Bismark a few years ago. There has been legal wrangles over ownership, which has been finally settled.
The Eagle is up for action and is estimated to be worth £20m, the proceeds will be split between savor an Uraguay.
Fears that the Eagle may fall into extreme right wing extremists has Ben raised and dispelled.
Hopefully Eagle will go to a museum.

Vic - I thought the German Eagle was salvaged from the Graf Spee off Montevideo - I could be wrong.

Was there not a ship of the same name in WW2?

Sunk by British gun and air fire in the battle of North Cape.

John, correct, her keel was laid in 1935, and she was the lead battleship in her class.

    Hi HD John.

in WW2 THE German battle ship Scharnhorst was sunk by the HMS DUKE OF YORK,
, and her escorts, off the North Cape , on 28 December 1943,
out of a crew of 2,000 only 36 survived.
I did two weeks training on HMS DUKE OF YORK a 35,000 ton battleship. in 1950.
A fantastic vessel and a fantastic experience

Post #8 I can't remember the title of the book on the Battle of the North Cape a long time since I read it. As I recall radar played a big part in the battle
the " Scharnhorst " could not hide in the darkness, she was lit up with "Star-Shells" and then pounded to destruction.

We were up at the North Cape earlier in the year and in the pavilion there is a complete story of the battle and destruction of the German battle ship.

A pointer on the cliffs shows the direction in which she now lays.
