Just been on ABC news website and looks like 70 Australian seamen may be about to be become un-employed.

It will be interesting to hear what the various maritime unions involved have to say about their members future unemployment. If you have the time keep us informed of future developments. News like that will probably not appear in the media in the U.K.

Tony #4 It appears to me that is all about out-sourcing more jobs?? All that happens is that savings go to a private company who employ the same workers on a basis that has less wages and benefits to the employee. Other employers (Like councils) have been doing that for years. One of the largest of the outsourcing companies in the U.K. (World) Carillion went bust recently leaving the tax payer to pick up the pieces. In an area of high unemployment the work force must wonder if there will be any worthwhile jobs in the future. Closer to home we saw the demise of the British Merchant Navy by Flagging out to the Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Hong Kong etc. as a ploy to save on wages and benefits paid to seamen.

John, there is a local waste management and architectural salvage company, run by a wealthy family.
They have a big yard where they sort rubbish by hand. All the employees are Romanian, all on basic pay. They pick items off a conveyor, if the conveyor is standing due to breakdown, they don't get paid for the idle time, if they leave the yard they are fired.
They live in a house owned by the company but have to pay rent.

They were also doing this in the N.H.S in a number of ways, Carillion and others were building hospitals under the P.F.I scheme. They build a hospital for the N.H.S. man all the building sevices for 25 years on a contract basis, at the end of the period the N.H.S. can then purchase the hospital. The contract labour used by them are employed under inferior terms than those employed directly by the N.H.S. Trusts also outsourse various contracts that used to be in house, the outcome being that the employer saves at the expense of the employees conditions of employment, being less than directly employed. It happens almost every where these days unfortunately for the employees.

Any company or organisation that outsources jobs, must comply with TUPE regulations These regulations protect the employee, giving same terms and conditions as thos of their previous employer.
The only difference is that the Pensions must be comparable, not identical.

Yes Vic as the N.H.S pension is a good one they usually find that the new pension is inferior. On new builds they usually employ there own direct staff, this does not require the TUPE over. There is also the problem of a contractor going "Bust" and then being taken over by another that is unable to meet previous conditions.
