Re: new passports
Apparently, Members of the House of Lords have called on the government to reconsider awarding a contract to print new blue UK passports to a Franco-Dutch firm.
Not over yet, possibly.

Re: new passports
On the Beaverfir we often used to carry bank notes printed by De la Rue, across to Canada. According to the Details la Rue guy they
were worthless as they had something that was very visible missing from them which would be imprinted on them in Canada. We used to carry them in the freezer chambers, along with cheese and frozen strawberries. One time we had 7 million Canadian dollar travellers cheques and I was told that if you could get hold of them they were legal tender. We were only loading the one hatch at the time and the stevedore gang was made up of undercover police men. On discharge in Montreal, work on the whole pier was halted whilst armed Brinks Mats security stood shoulder to shoulder guarding them until they were loaded into an armoured truck and taken away under armed escort.

Re: new passports
When I was a paramedic we went to a non descript industrial unit for a fairly minor injury. We didn't understand the security and hassle until we found out that they actually 'pressed' credit cards for the likes of Amex, Matercard and Visa.

VOTES ?
Seems, Some politicians have privately contacted the party’s headquarters to warn the issue is causing problems as they knock on doors to campaign ahead of the local elections in May.
Yesterday, peers joined calls for an urgent rethink, but ministers refused to back down, claiming the contract will save £120million over its duration of a decade. Labour’s Lord Foulkes of Cumnock said: ‘On both sides of this House, there is a desire that this ought to be reviewed, in the name not just of security, but of national pride.’
Guess all is not over yet ?

Re: new passports
Lewis, thanks for that bit of info.
The GBP against the Oz dollar has not moved as much as against the Euro, but then different trading circumstances.
But I know what you say about pension differences. We have a part UK one and that goes up and down.
As to vehicle manufacturing, we no longer make cars here in Oz.
Begun in 1948 there were at one time 5 companies, but lack of interest from overseas made the export market a very small one.
Most were made for conditions here so were not so popular in other countries.
Then we discovered European and others which began to come into the country, slowly the demand for local slipped away so they all have now gone.
We now have to rely on all imported only and some do better than others.
But Land Rover with prices from $77,000 up to $285,000 are selling like hot cakes.
The show room I use where I bought and go for service is selling on average 15 per week.
Happy daze John in Oz.
Life is too short to blend in.
