Re: new passports
Well from here in Oz it certainly sounds like a joke, but from a business point of view I can understand it, best deal.
But is this fact or Face Book fake news?
We are to have some new costal patrol boats built here.
BAE which has a big site here in Melbourne lost the contract to a Germany company who will build them in Queensland.
Do you now have the 'E' passports?
Lewis, the pound depends on which currency you compare it against.
With the Oz dollar and Jap Yen it has held steady for the last five or six months.
Tata the Indian company bought Land Rover/Jaguar few years back.
They injected millions into it and now it is one of the most successful vehicle manufactures around.
Land Rover employed another 1100 persons at the Leicester factory which is if I am correctly informed the only one doing three shifts.
Happy daze John in Oz.
Life is too short to blend in.

[QUOTE=happy daze john in oz;300869].
Do you now have the 'E' passports?
I have had one for years John, problem is some of the regional airports are not geared up for them.
Whist I totally agree that UK passports should (ideally) be made within the UK we must remember that De La Rue does make passports and currencies for 40 different countries, albeit that these countries do not have the facilities to make their own. The solution in my mind, as we are told that 70/75% of UK citizens have passports is charge another £1 per blue passport issued and this should cover some of the discrepancy between the UK/French quote

John the £ has been reasonably steady against most currencies world wide it goes up and down a cent or two and then drifts back. My point is check it against pre brexit vote rates and it has dropped significantly. One thing I know for sure I am €200.00 a month worse off in my pension now than I was 3 years ago, and that is how much the GBP has dropped against the Euro, and that is even taking into account pension increases by UK Gov.
This is a two edged sword, good for exports but bad for imports. It is good for tourism, home and for those coming to the UK from abroad. A lot of UK citizens are now taking there holidays in the UK now instead so as to avoid the hit on the exchange rates.
Land Rovers were manufactured primarily at the Solihull plant, near Birmingham, but production of the Freelander was moved to the Halewood Body & Assembly plant near Liverpool, a former Ford car plant. The Freelander is also assembled in knock-down kit (CKD) form at Land Rover's facility in Pune, India.
The Jaguar & Range Rover/Land Rover brands are going from strength the group recently started to employ more people at the Hailwood plant on Merseyside. Sadly though the Vauxhall plant is looking very vulnerable since it was sold to the PSA group which is French owned. 400 jobs are to go by the end of the year. The future of the plant is secured until 2020 as that is when the current Astra model is due to be replaced. Basically the Astra is not as popular as it once was due to the increasing popularity of the SUV's such as the Moka.
According to the French news in English this morning the new British passports will be produced in Holland as the company who won the contract is a French/Dutch owned company. The French government has said that French passports will be made in France, they state this is because of national security issues. So who has got it right. !!!!! Someone has posted that the UK passport will be made in the UK by the French owned company Thales? and this will create new jobs in the UK. Thales is a very big company, they are involved in joint projects with BAE, weapons and defence projects , they were involved in the design of the two new RN carriers Queen Elizabeth& The Prince of Wales.

Re: new passports
#33 why should you have to pay an extra £1, why not just reduce your profit margin?

Lewis, with all due respect maybe there isn't a large profit margin built in. Think most of us would support our industry and security for an additional £1 if that is what it takes.
First rule of business, make a profit, so you can expand, if you expand you need more people, everyone wins, I know it goes against the grain of socialism. As you are renting out your property in the UK, you're not satisfied with a break-even situation are you, don't you need to make a profit for upkeep/maintainence and the occasional unforeseen repairs maybe occasioned by an inconsiderate tenant, or natural disaster etc etc., it's called a contingency fund

Re: new passports
What has me renting out my UK property got to do with the profit margin on a UK passport?
Just to put this to bed before it kicks off again.

Please Lewis read the post correctly, it was an example of business practice, nothing more, if you read something more into it then alas I cannot help that, I could have just as well have said 'Joe Bloggs' instead of 'you', but alas I think you may still have been offended as you would have no doubt imagined that I was referring to your personal situation. Quite honestly you do tend to jump in as being offended on a number of posts where-in no offence is intended, please do take time to read a post correctly before responding in haste. That's all from me, if you want to kick off please feel free
