Passenger Ship Material?

Just been reading vernons commentts on serving two sittings of fourteen and the most I ever had was two twelves which drove a few lads mad, no wonder we drank quite a lot then.We called them aircraft carriers as the tables together were so long.
That was on the Remuera in the early sixties and it wasn"t so bad on the Rangitoto & Tane as the maximum sittings were two eights. Of course with my luck I got lumbered also with afternoon kids sittings
so consequently got no siestas, happy days, well some of them were cheers shipmates.

Empty Beer runs at 0600 hrs, scrub outs, strap up,lay up,then do it all again the next day must have been ga ga. Tables of ten to 14 and you had to remeber what the bloods wanted no writing it down like they do now. Bur we had a room by the sea, all fou nd and an early morning call.

I was on Rangitata in 1955-1956. i was a stewards boy and manned the passenger lift. Oh those emigrating
girls!!:)

Utility Steward must have meant different things in other companies. I had to serve the outward journey to Oz.on a P&O ship as a U/S but the main job was pearl diving in the strap up. We used to go to work dressed like fisher wives in rubber aprons and wellies. I managed to get out of there homeward bound and finished up as a winger.

I joined the TIKI in London went to Liverpool for dry dock this was August 1952 as asst/stwd, back to London then off to NZ via the Panama and Pitcain .Great ship ended up as asst/storekeeper left for the Empire Windrush in September 1953 (talk about out of the frying pan and into the FIRE)

I sailed with Dickey Dunkley on the Manapouri, I was AB, then Bosuns Mate, Aug. 69 to Sep. 71, is he still about ? Rgds., Willie.

i was third officer on rangitoto from 1966 to 1968 joining after the seamans strike .played in the famous football team that won auckland shield twice in one voyage
