Otaio 1970/ 71
Was anyone on the Otaio visiting Auckland, NZ around 1970/71? I am seeking a carpenter from Belfast, Jo Gibson, for a reunion with an old friend (part of a tv programme reuniting long lost family and friends). If anyone can help please contact me via email address supplied.
Thanks.

New today and find it an odd way to reply ? have i missed something. I was on the Otaio 70/71 and there
was no Jo on board the chippy was not from Belfast. Who would want to pretend to be a chippy. We did have a messman old Liverpool chap who joined the ship with just the old brown shopping bag with string
handles and what he was wearing. The only time he was fully dressed was on captains inspection days.
So one day boys will be boys and they decided nick his socks from the drying room. This was inspection day.
The messman came ranting to the mess saying who ever took his socks might as well take his shoes. say no more.
Off went the lads and removed said shoes. The messman some what down cast came back to the mess
shaking his head saying you will not belive this but my shoes have gone who else takes a size 7?. Every one
in the mess were doing their best not to laugh. At this point the big boys decided to join in and went and
removed his bunk. It was nearly the end of smokeo and the captain had started his rounds.I still don't
know to this day where they hid his bunk but it was one of the funnier stunts on the Otaio. Come on
own up where is it.
