    Default William lorrain mcqueen

    Hi all,
I am enquiring if anyone knew or sailed with my father William Lorrain McQueen?
He was a 2nd and 1st Engineer who sailed with the NZSC/Line throughout the 1950s.
I believe he sailed on the MV HERTFORD, MV RANGITANE, RINGITIKE, RANGITATA etc.
I know very little about his days at sea in the Merchant Navy and would be interested to hear from anyone that knew him.
I realise that this is a long shot as I am trying to locate his shipmates of 70 years ago!
Hope to hear from someone soon!

    Best wishes
    David McQueen

Would this possibly be him? https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ils/r/C8352733

    Reference: BT 372/1392/153
    Description: R543432 MCQUEEN W L 31/07/1929 SCOTLAND
    Date: 1913-1972
Held by: The National Archives, Kew
Former reference in its original department: R543432
    Legal status: Public Record(s)
Closure status: Open Document, Open Description

If so this is his Seamans Pouch, and will hold basic info, you will need his CRS10 to have all his Sea Time Details.
    Cheers

Looking at this logically, if your father was a C/E in NZSC in the 1950's then in that company he would more than likely at that era be in his 40's, if his peers were of the same age or thereabouts then they would now be in the 100/110 years of age bracket, so seeking surviving shipmates may be a forlone hope, even if his peers were in their 20's they would be in the 90's brackets.

Ships in that era, and the ships you name would have crews of 70/80 persons, they were not one big happy family, ships had cliques, dictated by rank and departments and unwritten onboard procedures. Senior officers did not mix socially with junior officers, officers did not socially mix with ratings, life aboard was a heirachy system. One group would be Master, C/E, Purser, 1/M, 2/E, the latter two if they were lucky, 2/m and 3/E and perhaps R/O would be another group, Bosun, Chippy, Donkeyman would be another group, Stewards had their own groups as did deck ratings and E/R ratings, navigating and engineering cadets were not allowed in the ratings accommodation unless accompanied by a senior officer. So you can see from the foregoing that any chance of there being a living peer of your father's are to say the least rather remote; but the world is a strange and wonderous place

Ivan I don’t know if you were still at sea at the time but what we went to sea wth as regards Engineers on the average 10,000 ton tramp was chief second third fourth Engineers and two or 3 junior engineers ,much later when people liked titles suddenly there appeared the designation 1st Assstant /Chief Engineer , some of them were annoyed when you called them second Engineer Today most crap like being pretentious on working ships doesn’t exist anymore as your lucky if you get two Engineers on board some vessels.so 1st. And Chief Engineer could be two different entities . To clarify the third engineer would become the 2 nd. Assistant , and Fouro the 3rd Assistant. Watchkeeping remained the same , just the titles . Whether you approved or not was up to the individual. Don’t think the money changed though . Think I only sailed with 2 certificated shall we say second Engineers on tramp ships they were mostly dispensated which in itself was a certificate of approval for that particular ship and that set of Articles only . During the war I was told by by some of them they held permits , similar but not the same ground rules as a dispensation. Cheers JS

Yes, this is definitely him, this is his date of birth.
Can you tell me what a CRS10 is?
Do you know what information the National Records at Kew hold, is it worth contacting them?

    Many thanks and kind regards,
    David McQueen

    Ivan,
    thank you.
    I realise all of this.
I know it is a remote chance, but it is worth asking the question.
As an Engineer who left the company in the late 50s theoretically there are folks who sailed with him that could have been 10 years younger than
him, which would put them in their early 80s now.
    Thanks again...

Hi David , the CRS10 is the comprehensive record of a Seamans full Service , in most all cases it will have all his Sea Time Records! So well worth looking into it, although if not going to Kew in Person can be a costly process depending on his Service time!

This Link should hold his Record, in this Series, but you need to Quote his Seamans Pouch as well if applying Online!

    Cheers

Many thanks, this is very much appreciated.
I did sight his CRS10 many years ago, which showed his service dates and ships he sailed on.

    Best wishes,
    David McQueen

    Ivan, to confirm.
My father left NZSC in 1957 when he was 28. So logically some of his shipmates particularly within the Engineering Dept could have been
up to 12 years younger than him which today, would make them 82 years young!

#9 David in 1957 I was 20 years of age and had already been at sea for 4 years. So logically it could have been me. However the only time I was on ships in the liner trade was for a year in 1967 and that was on the eastern seaboard of the USA Canada and the West Indies. Keep your fingers crossed someone may still turn up .JS
