G'day rivet, thanks for that bit of info, I will follow it up.
Hi I sailed on the Haparangi as an ab nov 1972 paid off in avonmouth feb 73 after a good trip. all i remember is that it was donkey work.
I just tried the BarryMcdonald email address and it came back via the Postmaster, I did three voyages on the Durham, Captain Holligdale was the Head Honcho , Glenn in Australia
The Durham Association in Aus is always looking for new faces, especially in Melbourne. You do not have to have sailed on the Durham, but it does you no harm ! I wil try to get an e-mail address for you that works.
The only qualification you need is that you worked for NZSCO. Hope you are not another anchor clanker as there there are not too many gingerbeers that belong and we are all getting a bit long in the tooth.
Please excuse me for 'having' an input' and I hope I have not misread the posts,but......
The Durham Association sounds exactly like the kind of Association I would rather not join.
I sailed with enough stuffed shirts in my junior years without having to suffer them now.
I would have thought that as we are all getting on in years ,and not too many of us left from that era, that you would welcome anyone ,no matter how tenuous their connection was with the companies concerned.
And your so old-fashioned references to 'anchor-clankers' and 'ginger-beers' is not helpful either.
Regards
Gulliver
Well Terry I was with NZSC for a while, but the reference to 'ginger beers' ay have a different conotation to catering crew.
hi gulliver. i you don't like stuffed shirts don't bother going to the clan line site. as an ex castle line steward i was not very welcome. cheers. alf:D:D
You are very welcome here Alf :-)
Brian.
Hi Terry.
What the hell are "Anchor Clankers" and "Ginger Beers"???
Dave Williams(R583900)
Anchor Clankers is a term I only recently heard, it refers to anyone on deck. Ginger Beers is a cockney slang for engineers, both expression are a bit tongue in cheek and not to be taken seriously.
The Durham Asociation is not full of stuffed shirts, at least I do not think so. Its ex seafaring guys from deck, engine, catering and shore staff. All good blokes with fascinating stories to tell.and memories to exchange. Apart from the fact there were only a few engineers , electricians and freezers the rest were Captains and crew, radios and a few guests.
Its a social gathering, so if you do not want to join, then as far as I am concerned its your loss. After all, the common bond is, that we were at sea and any differences there were, are now long gone.
