We were in Napier once when we had to let go in the middle of the night. Ships had to use shore moorings which could be released by slipping the senhouse slip, as you could get a heavy swell in the bay.
Being the middle of the night quite a few of the crew were still ashore, and a lot of girls on-board who sailed with us to the anchorage.
The captain, who I can't recall, was a star. I think we were anchored for about 3 days before going back along side. Some of the girls worked their passage by helping out cleaning cabins and I believe some served in the officers wardroom as some stewards had been left ashore.
This would have been on the Illyric or the Icenic.
