    The Baskerville 1961

16 Comments by Leonard Nicol Published on 7th November 2019 09:57 PM
I joined the Baskerville back in 1961 and did three trips to Canada. I was a young A/B, had just turned 22 and had never been to Canada before. I was on the wheel and we were heading into Dalhousie, New Brunswick when the ship kept going to starboard. I said to the captain "wheel hard to port captain. ship still going to starboard." He replied "don't worry son, we have just hit the ice." I had never been in the ice before and my first thought was of the Titanic. However, I caught on that this was usual for this particular run and we were going slow ahead. We got stuck in the ice and got out twice but we totally stuck the 3rd time. W took another 10 hours to reach port with the help of an icebreaker and helicopter. it was another exciting experience for a young man and has stayed in my mind ever since. Leonard Nicol

    Hi Helen.
Obviously the same ship that Leonard was on, and Ivor was on a different ship, with us oldies sometimes the memory slips.
    Cheers Des

Hi, thanks for your post. To be honest it was the most difficult ship to identify and all because I wanted a picture. I don't know how dad remembered all the information, names and detail he did, so presume he must have written stuff down but I never saw it. I have attached a copy of the ship but not sure the 1946 or 1954 but have another somewhere. I am sure got another but cannot find at present. Dad sailed on 26 ships (including both Queens for 4 years after WW11 and Baskerville). Tried to attach his A-Z ships list but being Word doc. would not attach. Cheers. H

#11.. Helen she has the dimensions and gross tonnage of the typical British tramp of the day, the name Runcimans is also a sure bet on that. Also the name mullion and Co. H.K. Brings back memories also. About that time 1970 I was on a similar vessel owned by these people. She to finished up in the knackers yard as well. Regards JS.

    HI John.
Your right there, when I got the picture up I thought it was the Trevose one of Hain's that I was on, paint a H on the funnel and it's the same.
    Great ships for the era.
