Well, before I went to sea,I was I admit a bit of a spoofreader cadet.I began to correct my copies of Treasure Island,Moby Dick (who wouldn't?),Ivanhoe( of which I thought an apposite sequel would be A Rake's Progress,or The Secret Garden.)

Even today,and it is just the way my brain works,I can find my enjoyment seriously affected by errors in a text of a book that I am reading,whether that is a novel,magazine or reference work,in fact some of our well-known reference books which many of us use for research are often riddled with multiple misspellings or incorrect grammar. They really do seem to jump straight out of the page at me.

Anyway,what really prompted me to reply today :

Well,Like many of us,perhaps whose hearing is not what it used to be,or more usually because of the gobbledygook,mumble -jumble many actors utter today, I like to use Subtitles. Yes,it is amazing how many subtitles get it wrong,some seriously wrong,but more usually amusing as well.

Today I turned on my TV ,subtitles on) for my weekly Wednesday 'Prime Minister's Questions'.

Almost choking on my chocolate hobnob (other tabnabs are available,well not really 'cos they've all gone now) when the announcer said"So now let us go over to the House of Commons for Prime Minister's Questions"

Looking immediately down at the subtitles it said...........so now let us go over to the House of Commons for PRIMER KNITTERS QUESTIONS (my capitals) !

What annoys me continually is mainly the American tv series most watched where the background music drown out what the actors are saying , especially to those with hearing problems in the first instance . My wife gets annoyed when I continuously ask her what was said , I think she uses the annoyance bit because she can’t make out the oral misfunction , who the heck wants to listen to the music when a dying man is trying to utter his last words. I don't know if your Tv in England is the same as ours, here they tend to put subtitles in white on Green or some coulor that one can't read anything.

Think you will find the background noise is so loud because the script is so weak.
Then of course at times the music does not suit the situation on the movie.
