The first house we had, a terraced house in east boldon built in 1900, our next door neighbour who was a retired catering super for common brothers, put me onto an outfit that did spray on foam roof insulation, which at the time was regularly advertised in the newspaper, got it done for around £120 in 78 and the effect was instantaneous, never had to have the heating on upstairs even with feet of snow outside.
Now apparently this is banned as it prevents the wooden roof joists from breathing and can lead to rot setting into them. Ever house since then has had fibreglass wool insulation. Here in the u.k roof insulation seems mainly to be blocks of sandwiched foam insulation between building paper or something similar.

There are contractors now making good mony from removing that sprayed on polyurethane foam (quite possibly the same guys who were applying it). Theres no doubting its thermal efficiency, just that application style (also releases harmful materials into the atmosphere) is not liked by mortgage lenders.

#48 Now if that had been 5 stars you saw through holes in the roof they would have been Acrux, Cacrux,Imai, Ginian, and Mimosa. But you being a good Australian citizen would have known you were looking at the Southern Cross the one on the flag, if it was the ship then you would really of been in trouble. Ref. My #1. I see today the headlines in some news papers is the bind the present government is getting themselves entwined in. This is due to not coming clean in the first place about negative gearing which they now want to change hopefully as I suggested by reversing the tax priviiges from Owner who rents out to owner /occupier which would ease the burden on the mortgage holder. It is like reading in the news what one wrote on here yonks ago. The whole problem is successive governments relied on the owners of rental propertys to supply the shortage of what in the UK are known as council houses, and are now left holding a problem too big for them to apparently handle. Maybe they should if not already doing so ,read this site to get tips on how to do . JS

In the sixties in Canberra and down here in Cooma they used to blow this fluffy stuf into the roof space for insulation, about ten years or so ago they discovered?? that it was carcinogenic, and it was so imperative to remove it, so much so that they had to destroy many houses in Canberra under strict conditions, the the State Govt wanted all houses examined, it was free of charge, we breathed a sigh of relief when ours was cleared, We have two layers of Insulation bats and nine foot ceilings, so pretty cool man.
