Remember heaving those holystones backwards and forwards whilst rolling port to starboard and the bosun throwing sand down to make it more difficult, I think they weighed the same as me!

Sailed on her 66 , beautiful ship the castle ships were always well presented, however i preferred cargo ships .

Just to clarify I wasn't on the Windsor Castle, but some of the cargo/liner route ships I sailed on in my earlier years had wooden decks, as later did a bulk carrier, but by that time I didn't have to push the bloody things around

#4 some if not all of those Castle liners running from Southhampton to Capetown ,Durban , Port Elizabeth , East London, must have had the tram lines built into the charts in use Ivan, they were way ahead of satellite navigation. By wooden decks you mean wood sheathed decks I presume ?

Eh! ba! Ghum John, tha's reet, wot were me thinkin, still had to caulk them at times though, nothing like a hot kettle of pitch in the tropics to cool you off! Tricky job on a rolling ship

I may be wrong, but i am sure some of the cargo ships i sailed on in the late 50s, had wooden sheathed boat decks, by that i mean on the lifeboat deck.

It was compulsory Keith on all decks over accommodation, only ceased as a requirement when composite sheathing was introduced.
