    Default suez canal

going through the suez canal in the 1950-1960s.i was mainly on esso tankers in those days and being on deck, edh and ab i had to take my trick at the wheel.to start with the pilots then were british.quite a stuck up bunch, just before the suez crisis they were russian,a right surly mob.after it was all over and things got back to normal,it was egyptian pilots.different altogether, quite pleasant and polite .that is how i remember it from those days.still enjoyed my time, would do it all over again.

Last tome I sailed the Canal was in 2005 on a world cruise.
There was a very large high bridge over it built by Japan,
It was also much wider than before

I have been through the Suez a few times with the Round Africa Runs with UCL, The Warwick and Dunnottar Castles did that, First from East Round to West Coasts then back to KG 5 then next trip in the opposite direction. Loved that Run.

The canal, what a place, once seen never forgotten.

In Suez ashore bought a Philips electric razor for one pound, that was way back in about 64, but it still works though sounds like a motor mower gone wrong.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Been through the Suez canal that many times I have lost count. It was fun when you went on the buoys at Port Said. Yes I know you had to go into lockdown. It was always fun to let Jock McGregor pretend to cut your hair, not sure he ever took any off. Must admit I nearly ended up like Van Gough a few times. His patter was great, he could mimic anyone's accent. The rubbish the Bum boat men used to sell but I bet nearly everyone of us bought something. It was were you learnt to barter. The gully gully or gilly gilly man some of the best magicians you will see great fun. Especially if there were wives onboard some of the wives would have chicks coming out of god knows were. All good fun
As for the transit well as soon as you got out of the Canal zone it was like wacky races every bugger was in a hurry.

Took a run up there while in drydock at Skaramanga, scary looking down from the top.
