In Adelaide our skipper met John Cooper from Coopers brewery and invited him on board. A very social chap. We were chartered to British Phosphate running rock phosphate from Christmas, Ocean & Nauru islands to Australia. Coopers were about to bring out there first clear ale, at that time they brewed stout and ale with lees in the bottom of the bottle. It was organised through customs that 50 cartons of the new brew would be put on board to see how it travelled. On return to Adelaide they were put ashore for testing and another 50 cartons of Stout (A baby in every bottle) **** that is why the rainbow people are pillorying Cooper Ales now, put on board for free.
Discharging in Port Harcourt we had a visit from a local prince and his entourage of about 20.
Straight up the gang way in all their ceremonial robes, got half way over the deck to midships when they all started to leap and dance around when it dawned on us they had bare feet.
We were discharging bitumen at the time, decks were over 150*c, wonder why the shoreside gangs never told them; I never did find out how they got back ashore, there was quite a few forced draught jobs in the party.
