Bad weather

That Marian as far as I recall when at Sea was Tinned Pudding,but possibly on other Ships made by the Cooks!
The Tinned stuff was quite good! I used to eat it with Ice Cream! Lovely! But it was traditional to eat it with Roast Beef,similar to the Yorkshire Pudding! I have a peculiar taste at times! LOL
Like eating Fresh Bread with Coke or Grapes! Yummy! Or my favourite Jelly Sandwiches!
I also liked Duff sliced with Marmalade or Black Current Jam!

Like Brian I did one of those coast voyages from Newcastle to Gravesend. A five or six man crew but I was only there as a means of travel more or less, company said a steward sold be o there. Before leaving Newcastle one of the crew brought on board 4 cases of Newcastle Brown ale and two loaves of bread. The skipper asked him what was all the bread for?

every ship i was on the cook was called doc......ibelieve it was cos he doctored the food ie made it better............but sadly some didnt regards cappy

I think he was called Doc because the Cook had the knives and bone saws, so if a man was badly injured he knew how to amputate a leg etc.
That is what I heard when I was sailing with Capt. Bligh and Captain Cook.

It was delightful, that's the problem couldn't stop eating it, dough mixture with raisins and spice, steamed in round tins,
came out like long sausage 'bout 4" round, tasted like dumpling, could fry it, great with custard or just by itself,
yup, no wonder I got constipated.

I under stood that the name Doc, was from the old days when the ships cook did any doctoring that was needed aboard?

Marian, I used to make a steamed pudding/Duff.
Sad to say. I lost my recipe book when I moved from Vancouver to Prince Rupert.
Would love to have a feed of Duff again.

Marian, the ingredients were self raising flour, dried currants and raisins, suet, bread crumbs, sugar, eggs,
milk, mixed spice, baking powder, salt, molasses, although I've forgotten the quantities of each, everything was
put into the mixer and made into a dough, then steamed in the tins for couple hours or so, about 10 tins I think
for around 30 crew.
