    Default Weird Country Western

One of the first hit songs I remember as a kid in England was a big hit in 1949 by Vaughn Monroe "Ghost riders in the sky." I loved it so much I've always had a soft spot for Country Western songs. Some, not all.* I enjoy music, I have favorite classical pieces, Rock and Roll, some Reggae, a bit of everything except Rap, can't stand it.* Still, my grandparents couldn't stand Bill Halley and the Comets or Little Richard.

I was listening to a country western radio station and another biggie came on Marty Robbins "El Paso".* I remembered when I and my first wife and son emigrated into the States from Canada and we came by train from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Los Angeles, California.* As the train passed through towns memorialized in song I would start singing, like " The Rock Island Line" "Going to Kansas City, Kansas City here we come..." and "El Paso" in El Paso (station).

I got to thinking and laughing about some of the crazy titles of country western songs.* Here's my top 15 picks of the worst, they are not made up, they are real songs:

"Did I shave my legs for this?"
    "Kiss this."
"All my Ex;s live in Texas"
"If you're thinking you want a stranger."
"Mama's don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys."
    "I drive your truck."
"Will your lawyer talk to God?"
"She'll leave you with a smile."
    "Crazy ex-girlfriend."
"If you ain't lovin, you ain't livin."
"Too old to cut the mustard."
    "A heart don't need eyes."
"I'm gonna live some before I die."
"Longhaired Redneck."* ( a Redneck is a Southern, biggotted, white-trash male. So I guess it's a Hippie Redneck)"
I've got five dollars and it's Saturday night."

    And I ain't heared nary a one....Rodney

    Hi Rod.
I have a box of CDs of the Shadows, they play Ghost Riders in The Sky, I listen to it at least once a week, while I dream in my armchair, earphones on and my wife yelling to come and get your dinner.

Mama don't let you sons grow up to be cowboys' was a very big hit for a number of country singers.
The Highwaymen, Cash, Nelson, Christoffeson and Jennings had a big one with it.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

We've had our lives changed. Fed up with trying to find stations on the radio (it's black, with tiny black buttons - you need a hand lens to change channels) we've brought in an Amazon Echo. It's the size and shape of a large grapefruit and you can ask Alexa for any one of nine million tunes. Superb sound quality. The wife now happily cooks while dancing around to 50/60's music. Yesterday we sat down to lunch whilst listening to ITMA shows from the 40's. Just ask for 'Rock Island Line' and up comes Lonnie Donegan! I understand the artist's estate is paid a small royalty every time a song is aired. Ask what the time is or the weather, or where is the Sea of Azov, and it's there in an instant. Just ask for a radio station and up she comes! Alexa even reads from my published historical novel, 'Tom Fleck'. The digital, fiendish black radio has been stuck in the workshop. Best thing since the wheel.

Your right Des. "Don't let your babies etc....." was a biggy and still is. I just threw that one in "Cos the tarttle is kinda cute anall, innit it?" as we country boys from South Cara-oline-ah now living in Oklahoma say it. Cheers and thanks for reminding me. Rodney

but does she know who "Oor Wullie" is or who "The BROONS" are; I have just been given 15 annuals of my childhood favourites, that's my reading sorted for a while.
