Hi Des, we also thought it was the best we've seen. New senior 'producers' are taking over and that will be a hard act to follow but I have no doubt that they will rise to the occasion.

Richard, being a resident of Auld Reekie, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, is great event, best seen sitting in the live audience, the atmosphere is electric. Have been in the audience a few times and also been lucky enough to have worked there as a member of HMS Scotia, a local Royal Naval Reseve unit, assisting as stewards. Scotland’s current government would dearly love for the show to fade, die and go away, they cannot stand the Union Ensign and its colours. I hope they never succeed in stopping the Tattoo.

Bill, that would indeed be wonderful experiences. The nearly three years we turned the byre of Auld Smiddy in Kinclaven, nr Stanley into a couple of self catering units were great times. We went in to the The Auld Reekie frequently but not, sadly, to the Tattoo. The nicest gesture was from Forsythes, clothiers, Edinburgh for our daughter's uniform for the Bridge of Earn school. It was an account for payment addressed to Mrs McQuartermaine, in Lieu of Mrs M. M. Quartermaine. It turned out some decades later that she learned her great, or great - great grandparents (Robinson) hailed from Perth (the original Perth).

M and I are delighted to see the new series of the SHETLAND programme coming tomorrow evening on the ABC.
    Shetland : ABC TV
Our and our dogs' friends and veterinarian over many years, now retired, John and wife Adrienne Isbister are from Shetland stock. On the last episode there was this beautiful spotless new blue truck and trailer with ISBISTER SHETLAND right down the side. Met Adrienne a few days ago at the greengrocers and was quite chuffed with the series. Only way I'd miss the viewing would be to be taken off in handcuffs - or a worse alternative.

Not in any way trying to distract from the Edinburgh Tattoo Thread or to compare the two events:
The Royal Tournament was started in 1880 and was held at Islington London, after WWII it was moved to Earls Court London,
We used to go there as a family in the late 70's and in the 80's it was a fantastic show with military reenactments, military
bands and the Royal Artillery horse drawn field guns being raced around the arena was a sight to behold, but my favorite was
the RN field gun competition where two teams raced to assemble field guns, it was an obstacle race with things to overcome
including a span of about 70-80 yards where they had to rig up ropes and pulleys to hoist the gun parts across, it was a very
dangerous competition and exciting to watch "hats off to those fella's they were incredible", sadly Tony Blair decided it was
too costly and closed it down, can't help thinking he preferred the real thing which was even more costly in lives and money.

I've just watched a video of the 1988 Field Gun competition on youtube, if you've never seen it it's worth a look, I always
booked early to try and get in the front row, the atmosphere was fantastic, maybe Marian can post the video here for us
I'm sure you will enjoy it. JFC
