My first recollection of live music was the Salvation Army band playing outside our house in Fleetwood on a Sunday morning !! This was live music by a very large brass band in a narrow street of terraced houses - there was just no escape !! The best stage show I have ever seen was Lena Horne doing a charity concert at the Opera House in Blackpool - on stage for two hours and with her own band, her husband was the conductor. Well Marian they are coming later this month, the men in skirts playing heathen music. The Royal Scottish Tatoo is coming to Melbourne and the crowds will be in large queues to get tickets. The swirl of the pipes will turn the milk sour, the drums will drive the dogs mad, and heaven help us if some one attempts to toss the Caber, no doubt some will think it is Mary's wooden leg.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

The Royal Scottish Military Tattoo was to me once the great Event on the Calendar ,in the older days it was a terrific Show, and I sat awed at the magnificent display of all that went on!
However the last time I watched it on TV although still a great show,to me it was somehow not the same anymore, with the introduction of many various new things added, some of which to me anyhow meant little to do with the once great Tattoo.
But like all thins change comes, sometimes with great results and sometimes not, this event I am sad to say falls I the sometomes not!!
    Cheers

Anyway hope all who attend will still enjoy!

some of us remember the "real" sea shanties such as "the preacher in the dockyard church","standing on the bridge at midnight" and the party song "sing, sing or show us your ring".
there was a poem about eskimo nell which I could never remember.

Think You must have ,missed the Point.
Traditional in the sense, "of being Ashore, and enjoying. The Culture, with the Native. The Seaman Song ,incidentally, was around, before either your time .or mine at sea.
Preferred too ,to Sing ,rather than the alternative. Great Days ,Though. Sitting High on A Hill, in some Medi . Port . Imbibing. Looking Below ,at the Ship, alongside. Then someone declaring. "Let's Get another Round in Boys!" Followed by those ,Famous last words. "She can't go without Us !"

When men grow old and their balls run cold, and the tip of their knob turns blue,

When they have seen a life of trouble and strife they will tell you a tale or two,

Of the Artic waste an open space and a girl called Eskimo Nell

    and so it goes....................sort of
