    Default Lucerna

Interesting and a somewhat confusing 'factoid' came to light over the last few days. I was researching the Lucellum and Lucerna which were both built in Davie Shipyard in Quebec back in 1975. These ships were from a series of vessels originally ordered by Ogden Marine but sold 'off plan'. The ships were Lucellum (Yard #685), Lucerna (Yard #686) - built 1975, Ogden Saguenay (Yard #687), Ogden Ottawa (Yard#688) - built 1976 Athelmonarch (yard #689) and Athelqueen (Yard #690) - built 1977.

Lucerna was sold by Moss Tankers (Cunard) in 1988 and changed her name to 'Al Arous' and was sold 4 more times to end her days as 'Iona' in 2003 when she was scrapped. Lucellum was sold in 1978 to her Columbian charters and became 'Ciudad de Barancabermeja' being sold off a further 5 times and ending her life as 'SLOPS X' at the scrapyard in 2007.

The interesting factoid is that 'Athelmonarch' was also sold on several times and in 1983 was named 'Lucerna'. I dont believe this was a Moss Tanker charter but just a co-incidence. It has caused some confusion with many of the reference sites like 'Shipspotting.com' where they have linked Athelmonarch photographs to Lucerna in Moss tankers colours.
Anyone cast any light on what flag Lucerna (ex Athelmonarch) was under in 1983? Who owned her?

To close this, Athelmonarch went to the breakers in 2010 as 'Yong Chi' (owned by PRC) and Athelqueen ended her days 'Altanin' and was written off in the Gulf war in the Shatt-al-Arab river after 1980. Ogden Saguenay was scrapped as 'Ocean Queen' in 2004 and Ogden Ottawa was scrapped in 2007 as 'Seaexplorer'

    Hi Keith

Done a bit more research since the post....

Sisters built at Davie Shipyard, Luzon:
    Yard No 685 - Lucellum
    Yard No 686 - Lucerna
Yard No 687 - Ogden Saguenay
Yard No 688 - Ogden Ottawa
    tard No 689 - Athelmonarch
    Yard No 690 - Athelqueen

Lucerna wasn't sold by Moss until 1988 when she became 'Al Arous'. Scrapped in 2003 as 'Iona'. She could not have been ex Athelmonarch or any other name before 1988.

Slops X was originally 'Lucellum' - but not Athelmonarch and Lucerna. That's where the mix-up started. Lucellum ended her days as Slops X in scrapyard in 2007. Lucellum was sold in 1978 and renamed Ciudad de Barrancabermeja 1987 Mervea, 1989 Ravenna Trader 1991 Topaz 1997 Quebec 2000 Slops X

Athelmonarch did become a Lucerna in 1983 but I just think that is a co-incidence. Not Moss tankers though.

Interesting how the name Lucerna gets re-introduced into the equation. Love to know who was managing her and under what flag. Lots of sites point to Moss tankers Lucerna which is now clearly incorrect.
