Accensioin day
Today reminds me of the time long ago when i was discussing with our agent the planning and working of one of our feeder ships in
Fredericia , Denmark. He asked whether I wanted to order gangs on overtime. I said that she would be alongside to work a normal
day shift gang. No , he said , because tomorrow will be - then he paused while looking for the English word - tomorrow is
" Jesus Christ flying day "

I paid off a ship in Fredericia in Jan 81, and it was almost my "flying day". I was due to pay off before Christmas but surprise surprise - no relief could be found. My wife rang the company after we had been alongside for about 2 days and the told her they didnt know where the ship was, so she told them. Fortunately the crowd was working to rule so no cargo was worked after 5pm causing a delay.
When I finally got off I was being driven to Odense to catch a flight to Copenhagen when on the road the driver and myself simultaneously see this big truck with trailer coming the other way start to skid sideways taking up the whole road, so the driver quickly pulled to the side and we both jumped out and legged it. Fortunately the truck driver managed to get control and skimmed past the taxi with inches to spare.
Eventually made it to the airport, boarded the plane and started to take off, but the plane then started to skid sideways on ice before eventually taking off and I recall thinking just then, someone doesnt want me to get home?

Re: Accensioin day
Some how I think the 'Jesus flying day' is no more.
It is certainly not one here in Oz, but we have enough of the others to keep us happy.

Re: Accensioin day
It is accension day today here in the UK 29th May. Many christian faiths will have services today and also a holy communion as well.
Having had it battered into me by so called christian brothers accension day is 40 days after easter sunday. It is more traditional now they roll it over to the Sunday closest to the 40th day.
Cost savings no doubt as saves the church opening. Also the Priest missing his free his lunch round at Mrs Browns while her husband is away at work

Re: Accensioin day
If I recall correctly it was at one time known as Whitsunday, obviously some one did not like the name , hence the change!!

Re: Accensioin day
Close but no cigar, Ascension day 40 days after easter, Whitsunday used to called Pentecost which is 50 days after easter. Think the name changes depending if one is Catholic, or Anglican maybe even Greek Orthadox. No doubt Trump will change those names as well!!
