Re: Memories of Portishead Radio
For those that like a Classic Blue Funnel Ship....
Here is my First ship..."Cyclops" Built in 1947 on the Clyde ...John Brown...I think.... Built to repĺace BF's Cyclops lost during WW2.... On the Atlantic Convoys? (Grateful for any confirmation)
I can still pinpoint my cabin..... Believe it or not, there was no 2R/O's cabin. (The 1st R/O's cabin was a "suite " next door to the Captains cabin) They ran an Auto-Alarm bell down to the Owners Cabin. It was fabulous!
I had a bathroom...complete with a bath. 18 years old...first trip to sea...and I am in the "Owners Cabin". Wow!
And here she is: https://www.shipspotting.com/photos/...&sortBy=newest
If you look at the photo..maybe zoom in.... there is a doorway...under the middle of the aft lifeboat.... the porthole to the left was over my bunk.... or should I say.... "Bed"! Luxury!
When we returned to Liverpool some 5+ months later.... as we went through the locks..... at 7am.... I saw my parents on the dockside. (That's another story, for another day) "
When all things had calmed down and I showed them around the accommodation: They could not believe what "my cabin" was like! Remember...we had emigrated to Australia years before as Ten-Pound Poms" (That's another story....)
We had made the trips to & from Aussie on P&O's Strathmore & Strathaird..... in cabins on the waterline. So when Mum & Dad saw my cabin, well, I am sure you can imagine: They were well proud. I had done OK I guess.
And that has reminded of another anecdote of my First Trip.... That's three IOU's now!
Cheers,
Bedtime.
