Caronia,it was known as Edmundo's to us in those days. There was a "Bag Works" opposite where they made sacks or something the girls that worked there if they were outside at lunch time would shout "Dirty D1ck"if they seen you coming out of there

    Hi Caronia,
Neville made a mention of Doc Ross on the previous page.
Sometimes the girls in the bag warehouse saw you at the Locarno or the Grafton Rooms, and sorted you out then. To go to Rosses you had to wear a big hat pulled over your face, a pair of sunglasses, A big rain coat with the collar pulled up and a Daily Express fully opened in front of your face and as you walked down the alley dive sideways into the door and they still recognised you at the dance, "We saw you today , dirty dick".
Remember the old fella who gave you an extra `jag` of pennicilin for ten bob or fifty ciggies. he had thick jam jar glasses on and wore a brown overall.
    Those were the days.

For you guys that are not from Liverpool Dr.Ross's place was actuallycalled the "Seamans Dispensary"
If you came home with"Half a Gross"that was your first port of call, not that I ever had to use it but it was in the area where you would pass if you drank in that area.As Capt.Kong said guys would be passing there with a Newspaper in front of them and nip iin there quite sharpish.Dr.Ross was supposed to be an authority on Venereal Disease. It was called Edmundo's from the band leader Edmundo Ross.
    Regards.

    [QUOTE=Captain Kong;40074]
It was rumoured at the time

I always understood it was once a womens prison.

That's gone 'n blown a hole in my 'strangest place you've spent a night' stories - Womens Prison in Liverpool and Cathedral (Millport)

I must've stayed there two or three times in the sixties, once when I joined Inde, and a couple of others joining ships in Liverpool.

My one clear memory of it was the lift in one corner - the noise of it would wake the dead

It's just been announced on Radio Merseyside that a delegation of Liverpool councilllor's are to make a trip to Birmingham in the hope of negotiating a deal to acquire the old gates from the Sailors Home.
Apparently the gates were originaly sent down to Birmingham to some specialist foundry for repair but were never returned for some reason.I think the gates are now hanging on some building which is grade listed.

Liverpool council hope that Birmingham will agree that the gates are of no historic interest to Birmingham and should be back where they belong in Liverpool.Apparenly the Liver Bird emblem on these gates is one of the first times the Liver Bird emblem was used.
    Regards.

    Default The Pool

Hello - Just doing some research on my Grandfather - Bobby Barlow.
He worked at the Shipping Federation.
He was the one who passed out jobs.
    Found the postings interesting.
Sadly he passed away in December 1951.
