In the good old days when we took British cars down to Aus; any that were on deck had a cover over them, seems that thy want the rust to start earlier these days

Those were the good old days Des when an Alfa Romeo would rust through before you filled the tank three times, they still haven't lost that reputation, even though they are as good as any other marque these days.
Modern cars paintwork and construction can withstand the rigours of a deck passage much better these days, just as well really as I live close to the sea and my house windows are frequently covered in salt
