Re: shipping forecast
I do recall hearing the forecast as a young lad and wondered where some of the places were.
Rockhall, Shannon, Fairisles, Orkney and a few others.
Since then have seen a few and was in Orkney this year.
But how many other nations do such a comprehensive coverage of weather forecasting for local shipping I wonder?
Happy daze John in Oz.
Life is too short to blend in.

Re: shipping forecast
Hello John,
Some of the names have changed in recent years. so the groups go something like this
Viking; North Utsire, South Utsire
Forties, Cromarty, Forth
Tyne; Dogger, Fisher
German Bight, Humber, Thames
Dover, Wight, Portland
Plymouth, Biscay, Fitzroy* renamed from Finisterre in 2002. Vice- Admiral Robert Fitzroy was the founding father of the Met. Office in 1854. Also Captain of HMS Beagle, with its most famous passenger on board; Charles Darwin
Sole, Lundy Fastnet
Irish Sea, Shannon, Rockall
Maiin, Hebrides, Bailey
Fair Isle, Faeroes, SE Iceland
Trafalgar. Doesn't feature in every Broadcast ; only the 0048 Bulletin
Just finished reading, "Attention All Shipping " by Charlie Connelly. A Journey round the Shipping Forecast.
Interesting read . Bit rambling in places but OK
Hope you don't mind the corrections

Re: shipping forecast
I used to like listening to the forecast, the blokes voice was mesmerizing once he started. Wasn't his name James Arnett or something like that?

Re: shipping forecast
#7 The people in the background must have been quick to make up a synoptic chart of the areas , and mostly all made from Barometric Pressures supplied from ships at sea , there must have been hundreds to join up those isobars . Totally different today the spy in the sky does most of the work. Cheers JS.
Maybe that’s what they mean by A1. ? JS.
