    Further to # 10…The company took delivery of its first steamship the Duneric in 1896, but it was not until
    1912 when the fleet included 25 steamers, the last sailing ship was acquired. In 1905 the headquarters
    of the company moved to London, although the registered office and port of Registry remained at Glasgow.

    You’re correct on the Whitley Bay bit. His slightly older brother David about a year older was a school chum of mine we went to Monkseaton Secondary Modern School in Monkseaton whereas his younger brother went to Monkseaton grammar school a fare paying school I believe. It could well have been Donald as believe his father was called the same. They had a paper and grocery shop at the top of Links avenue and I delivered newspapers with David for the father. I only met Don if that was his name a few times , thinking back it was his name Don short for Donald. Anyhow if the same man as you mention he died up the Persian Gulf about the mid eighties with a heart attack. There was a bit in the local paper about him. Cheers JS
