Re: Container ship rolling dangerously
Maybe a disaster waiting to happen.
Many a container has gone over the side in such conditions.
Happy daze John in Oz.

#2 That sea doesn’t look anything too bad John, I would say the ship was tender I.e. she has a small metacentic height and is easy to push over. Whilst a more comfortable roll than being stiff , hope all her containers are well secured . JS…..

Must agree there JB , not much of a righting lever there . Reminds me when I was mate on a lumber carrier with 9000 Tn. packaged timber on deck . after continous heavy weather
all the way from Panama to Cardiff so much sea water was absorbed ( even after allowance made for this ) that there wasn't a lot of GZ left.

Not really caused by small GM but more due to ships hull form, can be countered by altering course or speed reduction.

Re: Container ship rolling dangerously
Forget the formulae for getting an approximation of your GM , in your head. But consisisted of counting the period of roll in seconds from upright to port or starboard back through the upright and over to port or starboard and back to the upright in seconds or in other words the period of roll. This was divided by a number which forget and gave you an approx. GM. The forgetting bits are something to do with the beam of the vessel. JS.

Re: Container ship rolling dangerously
My wife has taken to her new Mobile watching shipping disasters, {Maybe hoping she would see me on one of the decks LoL.] But she said that in the last twelve months 17,000 containers have been lost at sea, just the cost of those containers let alone the cargo carried will put prices up.

Re: Container ship rolling dangerously
Those 17000 containers could have been put to good use in the present circumstances to house the illegal immigrants entering the country ? JS

Hi John.
Never mind the illegals I think there are a few Aussies who would jump at the chance to fix one up as a home these days.

Re: Container ship rolling dangerously
There are a number containers her e in parts of Oz that have been converted to living space.
Some of the Unis use them to house students!!!!!!!
But that number over the side can pose a danger to shipping if they do not sink far enough below the surface.
Happy daze John in Oz.
