    Think it used to be .44 x beam devided by rolling period in seconds or maybe some unknown boffin in Brussels has come up with a better one ?.

    #11 Thanks John some formulas stick in mind for eternity , others have to rack the withering brain. Half convergency sticks half dlong times cos lat to convert radio bearing to mercatorial bearing, and distance of sea horizon equals 1.15 times the square root of the height of eye in feet , and maybe half a dozen more is stuck there , but is now useless information.     No John , not useless . You have something that the modern sailor will never have - a knowledge and experience that you have within you .
