Rigging a Jumbo

Thanks for those pics, looks like the first one has two Jumbos in action, I would love to have been aboard.

#10 wonder if there was any panic when the weight was landed , on getting the ballast readjusted to prevent a pendulum swing . Similar problem when drydocking a ship, the most dangerous time is on touching the blocks aft as in those few moments the ship loses stability and could in fact with a strong beam wind could fall on its beam ends , 6 inches by the stern was the usual trim aimed for on docking and the same trim undocking , so was usual to keep all the weights on vessel the same as coming out as going in. Today I imagine it is all done on computer rather than a pencil and paper ,and the stability info. Close at hand. JS

I may have put this on here before. The longest day I spent on the South Steyne was on one of her dry dock visits. WE started down to the dry dock in Sydney around 8am, lined her up and went in , then the problems started, when she was settling down they found that the blocks where in the wrong place, so they had to send for divers, it took until around 8 pm to get it right, then we had to wait until the big crane driver could get there to lift the gangway on board, by the time I caught my train and got home it was 1am the next day.

When the new roll on roll off ships came into being they thought it was the latest thing, but we know different we used to roll on and roll off many a time.

Yes Des, many a time we rolled off, and on after a night on the grog.

My first trip at sea was as a cadet on SS Nigaristan which had a newly installed 110 ton swl jumbo and remember loading a large heavy barge somewhere on the Thames and delivering it to Bahrain.Spent time on later in bosuns chair greasing the falls.

Can remember being on the Icenic in Suva using the jumbo on 5 hatch. Can't remember what it was we were discharging but the previous trip we had discharged on the Aussie coast and in one port we had been working cargo and had been paid shore pay. We were rich. When we were working the jumbo in Suva I jokingly said to the mate are we getting shore pay for this, he was quite serious when he said I'll pay you shore pay if you want. He was a right tight guy, stopped all overtime for the day workers.
