Most cruise boats I go on, even recently built boats, always have a great yellow stream of pollution stretching back to the horizon, (or forward if the wind dictated). I would never have a cabin at the **** end, due to the stink, and the sooty spots of course. I would have thought all that black soot crap was done away with these days, but it's not.
I remember we used to phone the Bridge before we blew the Boiler tubes so that they could position the ship so that all the sulphurous soot blew away from the Ship. I also remember our uniform whites used to develop holes after being washed due to the acid generated by the Flue gasses. Kept Indian Tailors in work.

Worst thing about the old City boat I was on, was on stinking hot nights we would sleep out on the aft hatch, and I'm sure they blew the tubes on purpose, leaving us covered in hot soot.
Funny though, coz anything that went wrong was put down to them doing it on purpose, due to the Union making Ellerman get rid of Lascars and using British seamen.
We have been watching a good program on liners, that's the ones that have sunk, the first was Titanic, last week was the Achilles Laura, don't know if I spelt it right, It was the one where the ship was high jacked and they shot and killed a block in a wheelchair and threw him overboard, The ship used to be the Wilhelm Rhues, I was in Antwerp alongside her with that name, lovely ship, the ship ended up having a fire on board and sinking,such a lose for a lovely ship.

What year was that Des ? In 1963 there was some passenger ship caught fire off the Canary Islands. I was up for Orals for master at the time and the examiner switched most of his questions of what I would do if in the masters position of such . Caught me completely off guard as got into the world of sprinklers which my total knowledge of at the time was those employed in reticulating the garden. Also I was running around in theory with extinguishers and starting fire pumps etc.He said Stop ! You are the master you delegate and you don’t leave the bridge ? If it had been 25 years later with a crew of 4 on board I often wonder if he would have said the same ? Anyhow he sent me down to the L and G fire fighting people on the Newcastle Quay side to find out the facts of life . Going back the following week apart from starting the emergency fire pump in theory he asked no questions at all on the subject. He spent all day asking just about every ship handling case in the book. His final farewell with the pink slip was Well! I was a pilot for 20 years and I’ve never seen a ship come off a jetty like you say , but in theory your correct and I cant fail you. I remember the bloke in the wheelchair incident but can’t remember the ships name on fire off the Canaries in 1963. Cheers JS

I can't remember the date, but was probably around then, I'm sure I remember you writing once bout the Wilhelm Ruys or a ship with a similar name that you encountered in South America, I think you ar right about the fire but It may have been off the North African coast
I could be wrong, I think everyone got off but may have been one death. It's on SBS tis week it the Collision between the Stockholm and the Andrea Doria.

Des that was the Ruys in 1962 in the Plate. Maybe the examiner knew also and why he asked so many ship handling questions .if I had known at the time I could have least have told him I dropped the anchor about 10 seconds before contact. And then doing the 3 minute mile down the foredeck. JS
Not so sure about pollution from ships funnels now.
Yes a bit of smoke when sailing out of port, but generally the air is clear.
From most it will be diesel fumes at worst but with the new ships using LPG I doubt if there would be any.
#33 The ship I was referring to was the City of Winchester, we had Indian crew ,engine &Deck and Goanese catering crew. I must have departed ellerman’s by that time . I think that the accommodation provided for the “Lascar” crews was pretty uncomfortable for them especially when Hot and I would guess really uncomfortable for British crews.When comparing the accommodation provided on European crew ships.I even slept on the boat deck on occasion especially when hot and my accommodation was ok . Only Draft vents and deck head fans ,No A/C in those times the Winchester was built in 1952.

John , Think you are confusing LPG ships are using LNG as main fuel source. Not saying they have never used LPG but the reason LNG is used it has a higher expansion rate than LNG. 1 cubic metre of Liquid LNG will generate 600 cubic metres of gas. LPG 1 cubic metre of Liquid LPG = 270 cubic metres of gas .Quote:
