    Default Committals at Sea

My Father John Lewis from Cornwall passed away recently and I wanted to scatter his ashes at Sea as he was the happiest when working on the ships and on the water.
I am disabled on crutches and wanted to know if anybody can assist or can this be done through the Merchant Navy whom my father served for over 45 years.

    Thank you

    Steven Lewis

Maybe the likes of the MNA would maybe know better on this. First of all do you have his discharge book and if so first it’s number and the names of any ships names inside. Maybe some on site may have known him. Sorry for your loss but whatever happens you will have to put out more information on your father and his career at sea . The MNA is the Merchant Navy Association and one of the few groups left of a once great British Group of Merchant Vessels.
Best Regards and hope you are successful I know what it’s like being on crutches John Sabourn.

Hi Steven, if you live near a coastline I suggest you try either a Lifeboat station / Pilot Boat station or even a ferry company. I've known seafarers ashes scattered in Ramsgate by the Pilot Boats & the Lifeboats plus P&O Ferries years ago.

I posted a reply about contacting the RNLI in Cornwall - about 11.30- and it seems to have disappeared !

Hi. Some years ago I was skipper of a rescue craft at Wellington NZ. On the odd occasion we would scatter ashes out in Cook Strait. There was normally a small donation to the unit for this service. May help in your circumstance. Allen Jones.

I don't know about the UK and other countries but here in Southern California coastal areas there are Cremation organizations that offer burials at sea. I signed up with one called Neptune years ago but I haven't opted to be buried at sea, I'm to be taken home to Geordieland and scattered there in the River Tyne. Thinking on that, I might end up in the North Sea.

Here in Melbourne burials at sea in the bay were common at one time.
Then the 'Greenies' got into the state gov saying it would contaminate the sea, so a ban was placed on them.
They had been done by a local tug company, for a donation of course.

But we ex seamen ate smart.

A lot of yachts use the bay, some take a time to stop in one place for a while, then come in.
Often there may a priest on board, no doubt out there to' bless the fish' of course
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.
