Interesting survey carried out by Norwegian navigation officers on the safety of autonomous ships. Even the younger ones thought that these autonomous ships did not contribute to safety of navigation.
The above link is to a Facebook page, sorry to those who cannot read it buts an interesting insight into today's navigation officers working on Norwegian vessels.

My understanding is that the USA did try some years ago with such efforts.
    Never heard the outcome though.

Autonomous ships are technically possible until Mother Nature intervenes and causes damage that a remote computer can not fix. I suspect that creating sufficient autonomy will cost more than any saving. Several problems I have experienced caused problems that the automation could not cure and required human intervention.

Many, many years ago, a US telecoms company installed the latest computer controlled telephone exchange.
The exchange had a built in diagnostic program which ran in the background. The idea was that if the diagnostic program detected a fault or potential problem, the computer would inform other machines that it a problem and was transferring all calls to other exchanges on the network., before shutting down.
The other networked computer exchanges interpreted the message as a there was a fault and that they should shutdown.
The Eastern Seaboard of the US was without telephones for twelve hours as engineers tried to reset the system.

These vessels rely on satellite connection to work yet only today news reports say russian hackers have hacked into commercial holiday flights and recently even hacked into a flight carrying a u.k defence minister returning from a meeting in Poland back to the u.k.

A hairy arsed 3rd engineer told me ( a first trip fiver) that these new automated ships were either automatic or autoof***. I had an experience of that when on one ship, the logging system went down and all temps/press etc had to be gathered manually. Where the gauges/thermometers etc were positioned meant you had to start taking the log as soon as you took over the watch!

Well one of the selling points for going to containers was to reduce theft. What happened was theft has become larger as they steal the whole container these days. How long with automated ships will it be before they just steal the whole bloody ship by hacking the controls. Such a big leap from the couple of half crowns wrapped in the dock pass that was slipped to the copper on the dock gate hey lol.
That's the way the mop flops.

Well if the ship that brought down the Brooklyn Bridge which had crew but was semi automated is any example; can't see it working all that well. Mind you I remember a I think it was a Jap tanker going up the English Channel with no one on the bridge.

I recall watching A show about a lone yachtsman stranded and how they survived. A box boat appeared and looked like rescue was just a matter of time. After shooting flares up at the bridge the ship sailed right past. Whether it is true or not I can see this as a sign of modern seafaring where it is a matter of every anus hole for hisself now. Where are all those idiots that done away with a lookout.

    Can just see it.
Sydney to Hobart yacht race and an autonomous ship crosses their path.
    Could make for interesting sailing.
