My Father was RN, trained on landing craft " I "and earned Atlantic Star, Africa Star, Italy Star and 2 war medals. He managed to get through to the North Africa landings and Sicily but was bombed at Anzio March 1944; 4 survivors not including him. I can always remember coming home from school and find my Mother gazing into space with a telegram in her hand but I could not really appreciate it as I was only six and a half. They were really tough days as she had me, 3 daughters, Grandad and a lodger. I did not apply for the RN as I had a slightly dodgy eye so cheated my way into the Merch at 16 and spent 10 wonderful years with Blue Star, Esso Tankers an Shaw Savill and only left because I was given an ultimatum " it is me or the Sea ", it broke my heart but I knew I would never meet anyone who could put up with me again so we married in 1963 and have just celebrated 60 years ashore ! Just like thousands who lived through the war My Mother and Father are my heroes who gave everything for their Family and Country.
