#20 Depending when the first lighter than air gas and the first French letter were invented John would or should be about the the time of the availability of measuring the upper layers of the earths atmosphere John , of course ensuring that the French letter was empty before filling with gas and tying the thermomoter to same . I remember the forecasts before N&S UTSIRE were invented in 1984.
I was at sea 1965-1971 as R/O in MN.

An effect, that is the understatement of the year so far.

Rain non stop for over 48 hours now, floods all over the place.
But fine weather later in the week, but how much later they did not say.
John Oz, they can get the information from core samples, so no need for French letters with a thermometer hanging from it. Anyway such a practice or similar was tried by the Chinese only for the US air force to spend a $million dollars ? using a missile to prick a ballon.

After analyzing enough ice core slices, which may each represent anywhere from a week to a year of time, a researcher can look for patterns to track changes in the atmosphere's composition and temperature, and what activity on Earth shaped it.

In the 1800s the only core samples known to scientists of the day were probably Cox’ s Pippins . JS

Core samples, use the info to suit the purpose. With computers, rubbish in, rubbish out.

Today a scientist from the USA climate bureau said the current situation with floods etc is the result of El Nino and La Nina pulling against each other.
El Nono is not as strong as first thought so La Nina is having a stronger effect,

But for us here in Oz, 'A land of droughts and flooding rains'

Back in 2002 here in Melbourne in early March we had 5 consecutive days of 40 degrees,'
We have not had a day over 36 degrees since.

ead an article some time back which told how ships captians kept details of temps, sea and wind conditions which they handed into the weather men when coming home.
