    Default Ships cranes wires

Saw this on gcaptain. I sailed as mate on a number of geared bulk carriers and checking and lubrication of luff and cargo wires was a pain. To inspect the hoist wire you could run it out on the deck to inspect it and lubricate it, nice if you had a pressure lubricator, messed if not. The luffing wire was difficult,t, requiring a bosun's chair being slung onto the wire whilst you worked your way down the luffing wire lubricating as you went, the alternative was to run the whole luffing wire off to inspect and lubricate it, a major task
The report is on cargo crane wires but does not mention stores or engine room cranes or even free fall lifeboat recovery wires.

As usual the recommendations are common sense but with many non practicable opportunities, as where does a vessel get the seamen to carry out these recommendations, they barely carry enough crew to maintain watches and in port the cranes are in use, but at least the legislators have covered their ass
