Have you seen the light
Welsh National Parks (WNP) have decided to rename the Brecon Beacons with a Welsh name unpronouncible by many no doubt. Local people and politicians were never consulted and most businesses are up in arms as most contain the name Brecon or Beacon and feel sure it will affect tourism and business.
The WNP have stated they have changed the name because beacon means fire, however a lighthouse is also a beacon and not many people set those on fire. The 'Shorter Oxford English Dictionary volume 1, A - M, 1306 pages describes Beacon as a hill, on which signal stations may or may not be installed, a beacon is a geographical feature not a man made object.
I think a bit of basic homework should have been followed rather than political correctness.

Re: Have you seen the light
As it is in Wales they can give it a welsh name why not. India have renamed a lot of there cities and regions back to Indian sounding names.
The SAS should kick off and take the place over.

No reason why not James, and I know you love your 'why nots' but it is the people who live and have businesses there who are complaining, because no one locally, including all local politicians were ever consulted and say that it will have adverse affects on their livleihoods. Their words, not mine. And the point of my post was the misplaced reasoning, but apparently you missed that in haste to get your 'why not' in

Re: Have you seen the light
No Ivan , no rush for a why not , perhaps the intention is to also add an English translation of the Welsh.
Here is a why not , in a Devon cream tea is it jam first on the scone or cream? why?

I used to go to Wales quite a bit when I was working, but now I don't have to, they can call it what they like.

Re: Have you seen the light
I should imagine the most vocal of those whinging about the change have never been there and never will.
Those who have, would know that the signs at the entrance to the park have always had the Welsh name as a translation of the English version. All they're therefore doing is making the Welsh name that in primary use, just as they did at Snowdon last year.
That change didn't cause the world to end so I can't see why this one will, in time the welsh version will enter the lexicon in much the same way as Uluru, Maputo, Mumbai, Port Klang etc.

.
Well those upset people who were on TV this morning lived there and were actually speaking from Brecon, alas your imagination was wrong this time, just because people make comments or are upset doesn't mean they are whinging.

That's most definitely not the take on it from the usual suspects amongst the wider press corps.
The surnames and accents of some of the whingers was very telling. Up here we call them white settlers.
