Hope this opens, it salary scales for C.P Ships in 1975, supposedly some of the highest from U.K companies, think She'll were the highest.

Not sure about wages, but was informed by the executive soux chef that the latest international maritime agreement says that no crew member must be allowed to work more than 13 hours per day.
They must also have working hours that allows for one break of at least 7 hours.

#7 Over worked and under paid would be my guess.
I was talking to a guy in the pub. He was saying his son is in his second year as a engineering cadet. When he is at college he is off pay and has to pay his own board and lodgings. He goes to Fleetwood College. He is hoping to come out with an HNC. His dad asked me for any advice I could offer him. My answer was as soon as you get you HNC go seek employment ashore.

The hours or work and rest are supposed to be regulated under the Maritime Labour Convention. Unfortunately it's comparatively easy to circumvent the intention of the MLC and very difficult to enforce. I know, I spent years fighting ship owners / ship managers during flag state and port state inspections. Anyone who has had to work a two watch system (just Mate and master) will know how knackering that can be when you add in berthing / unberthing, maintenance, surveys, loading and unloading, etc etc. plus having sleep interrupted in bad weather, in noisy accommodation, taking meals etc etc.
The MLC would be great if it was applied properly, but we all know how ship owners and operators usually have the well being of seagoing staff well down in their list of priorities.

I sailed with both CP and Shell in the 1970's. The salaries were pretty similar but the quality of life on most CP Ships was much better. I did one trip on a CP VLCC which was pretty grim, but the timber product ships, geared bulkers and product tankers were excellent.
